LOL!! “what the fox!!” I love that panel!!
Thanks 😀 I loved drawing it xD
robin you are AMAZING at drawing. i try to draw things but im not good at drawing. i mainly draw slime rancher fan fiction. but you draw SOOO WELL!!!!
Ouch! Kaya has won that little battle. But she better watch out when Kai strikes back!
The war can go both sides, still xD
*The Countdown for Counterattack has begun* XD
Yup xD
You know you need revenge, young Kai
and it has to be set to scale
and, because you know the target,
you know that you must never fail.
You know that she can take it on,
this nasty pulling of your tail;
you have to get your own back, lad,
before your final chance sets sail.
She thinks she has you, you know more;
you know of all of her weaknesses?
Getting revenge for her revenge?
That’s the play of geniuses.
You are a lyrical genius.
Agreed
I thought that she was going to quietly remove the scale so that the doctor would need to cut one out.
That would have been even more devious. She’s not quite that evil xD
“What the fox!”? Of course you’d go there considering this is an all-ages webcomic. I bet tearing that scale off was like tearing off a tiny piece of dead skin.
I think it would be more like yanking out a hangnail. I wonder if “Shut the fox’s mouth” would be something we might hear in the future.
Just so long as he doesn’t say it near a Vulpine…
“Shut the fox up!!” No, wait… I’M a fox!
I wonder if Kaya has forgotten -her- doctor probably wants a sample too… 😉
Gotta keep the age rating in mind :3
Also, it’s cute :p
Marco: “Kids, you’re not allowed to use curse words unless you’re quoting Shakespeare, or you can curse someone out while being grammatically correct in at least two languages.”
I just have a feeling Marco Romero would be like that. He’d be less angry about one of the twins cursing in Italian and more angry that they didn’t use the proper verb conjugation.
Don’t worry, Doc…it just means the inevitable sibling-payback game/feud will be slightly more than previously anticipated for his turn of getting her back. 🙂
(Just hope it’s not also going to happen in your office.)
Their dad would already be calling to ask if his insurance covers this xD
On the starting out pain ” scale “, I’d figure it to be around a 7 or a low paper thin fraction of 9.
The initial surprise is worse than the pain xD
The arguments and revenge are escalating too quickly. I worry that someone will end up nocked out
They never knocked each other out before. It will be fine xD
I think if they were two brothers, a punch would be standard operating procedure here. With a sister, the response might have to be more subtle and delayed.
Kai does hold back against his sister :p
Daaaaw, poor Kai, he was asking for it though ^^
Aren’t all siblings asking for it at some point? xD
Panel 3 did it for me. XD
Poor Kai, that had to hurt.
Look out Kaya, revenge is coming.
I loved drawing panel 3 xD
I would give it a 6 on the pain meter for being sudden and unexpected. I expect it will fade quickly though.
Oh I do expect there will be payback coming, not immediate but at some point in the not too distant future. At least the doc got his sample!
Fox hybrid walks by: “Hey!”
Kai: “No offence…”
So is that the male pain meter or the female pain meter? In my experience, girls are tougher than boys, at least, that’s the impression I get with my sister.
Are tails more sensitive?
I don’t really like to paste a sex on these kind of things. In my experience, it’s all about the individual person. I’ve seen both men and woman being tough as nails or being little babies about stuff. It also doesn’t help that both sides have idiots that seem to want to desperately proof they are the “strongest sex”…
Just be happy with who you are, and treat people the way you want to be treated, and all is well xD
(Unless you’re that fox hybrid. He is allowed to call out Kai for his swear word :p )
I hate to be “that guy” but satistically speaking women usually have a higher pain tolerance on average. There’s variance person to person, obviously, but data is there
Don’t worry about being ‘that guy’ with me. I’m open to all opinions, especially if they’re backed by facts. 😀
Sorry Cliff but that is a myth
If anything men have higher pain thresholds than women
https://www.sciencealert.com/do-women-tolerate-pain-better-than-men
Although traditional gender roles may play a role, so it is quite possible that there is not actually difference in the actual pain felt.
Oh! A metastudy! I’m going to enjoy that later. Thanks for pointing it out. I’ve only read the introduction before typing this so I don’t know if I’ll agree with the findings, but I look forward to reading it.
@Robin:
Redheads of BOTH genders tend to score significantly higher, concerning hypersensitivity to pain.
Oh, and tails are a bit weird. Sensitive in one way, not so much in another (Kaya has hit Kai with her tail before, when they were younger)
It looks to me Kai is not really in pain : a few second later and he is OK, just complaining quietly. His scream is more from surprise than pain, I would say.
Yeah, there’s also that :p
So, where will Kaya’s scale sample be (devilishly?) taken from?
We will see next week :p
Well, what did he expect when decided to prod his sister at the doctor’s office during a check-up? In all seriousness, this should be a learning experience for one or both of the twins.
Chinese New Year should prove interesting for the twins, especially if it ends up being Year of the Dragon. Fun fact, the Year of the Dragon is actually a time when China sees a spike in pregnancies, mostly because the Year of the Dragon is considered the most favorable time to be born by the majority of Chinese. That all said, Cleo might get a kick out of Year of the Snake and Benji might have a blast with Year of the Dog. Actually, think it would be hilarious if the twins somehow managed to expand their circle of friends to the point they literally have at least one member that each coincides with the Chinese Zodiac. They’re already off to a good start with 3 out of the 12 animals in the zodiac already part of their core group. The twins for Dragon, obvious; Cleo for Snake, a bit obvious; and Benji for Dog, a little obvious but still.
According to the Chinese Zodiac, I was born in the Year of the Tiger, my brother was born in the Year of the Rabbit, and my sister was born in the Year of the Snake.
Robin did draw a picture for the Year of the Dog, with Benji sat atop a festival dragon.

And I’m a goat! …or a sheep, depending on what part of China you are from. 😉
They will learn to guard their scales xD
Chinese new year is a nice time for me to make an illustration about it with the cast. Unfortunately, I didn’t have much time this year. I did make a ‘year of the dog’ one that Steve has linked to already.
The cycle has started over, we’ve looped back to the start of the wheel with the rat this year, I don’t think we’ve seen any rodent hybrids just yet, and that means next year is the Year of the Ox. The year of the Pig is an interesting case because it is alternatively known as Year of the Boar, a boar is just a male pig, but Year of the Pig comes after Year of the Dog.
But it’s nice to see those little projects that allow you to stretch your artistic abilities every now and then. Also, it’s important to mix things up a bit, otherwise, you’ll suffer burn out on the comic and leave the whole thing basically unresolved, that happened with Planes of Eldlor, the people responsible for it burned themselves out because they didn’t deviate from the story they were telling over the course of the comic’s life and it just stopped mid arc never to return.
It would be nice to see entire chapters that focus on Cleo, Benji, and Rex, it would be interesting to see how the twins manage to play things off as peripheral characters instead of the main focus every now and then. And those sorts of chapters could also give us snapshots of their homelives
“Guess you weren´t prepared for EVERYINTHING, huh?”
“Don´t go there, Doc”
Never have i seen patients and Doctors have such perfect chemistry like the twins and their doctors.
Except maybe James T. Kirk and Bones.
Also i love how the ears support the mimic in general, panel 3 makes this perfectly clear once more.
It might have been different if they weren’t such interesting cases of mythical hybrids. The checkup would likely have been standard procedure and over already. Poor Marco is waiting so long already xD
As the father of the twins he might be used to them taking a lot of time on such things due to their twin power resulting in double trouble XD
With Kirk and Bones it was also an interesting case, just that instead of a mythical hybrid, it were weird reactions to treatments usually considered free of significant side effects.
“What the fox”, “darn it”
English is not my native language, so I guess this is the way american kids avoid reprehensive words ?
If so, it’s quiet a good trick, never heard my kids doing that.
I honestly have no idea if kids really do this. I’m from Belgium. I just picked it up in the community somewhere and thought it would be great for Kai to use :p
I think this flurry of fox expletives mostly just spontaneously grew out of amusement at Kai’s usage. I’m in America and I’ve never heard it In Real Life, but then, I tend to avoid kids. 😉 On the other hand, it is quite possible!
@Robin:
Euphemisms can come from anything at all.
— Once I discovered Japanese fungi, I started to replace all my “S-Bombs” with: “Holy Shiitake Mushrooms!”
— After my 1st nephew was born, I was inspired by none other than the WB’s “Foghorn Leghorn” to come-up with:
“Now just a Gar-flinkin’, Sassafrassin’, Saskatchewan minute, there!”
…I figured that even if he knew what a gar was, he’d never figure-out how to “FLINK” it!
(…& before you ask, no, I’ve no idea what kind of verb “flink” might be. It just sounded like it combined the proper amounts of “impressive” & “intimidating”…)
😉
🙂
I’m surprised he knows even a substitute for “that word.”
Man, childhood has changed since I was a kid!
Oh, well, I’m 32 and I know that kids around me were using the actual words at age 10 and even younger. Kids pick these ‘forbidden’ words up like sponges. It’s way too fun for them to use them, even if they don’t know what they mean. It’s in kid’s nature to mimic grown-ups and swear words go with that. It makes them feel all grown up.
I’m only 26 myself, but I grew up in a fairly conservative family living in a small rural community. I knew my dangs & hecks, but it wasn’t until I was 13 or so that I thought to ask my parents about the ” oh, fudge” scene in “A Christmas Story.” Prior to that, I had absolutely no clue what Ralphie was talking about.
I’m only 14 so I can’t say anything about how things have changed, but I can say that I’ve heard many other children using fox as a replacement for the real word many times, and that I have heard kids as young as 7 using the real word, but have seen both extremes and personally just ignore the one I’ve mentioned.
It might have just been how I grew up. Nobody in my house swore, & the school I went to had some pretty strict policies about profanity. The only words I picked up came from movies and TV, and for the most part I never watched anything above a PG rating.
I guess that would make mine a sheltered childhood, huh?
Yeah, we basically use words that sound similar, though I’ve never heard fox used as a stand in. Still works.
I picked that up on the internet somewhere. Thought it was cute and would work for Kai xD
That was meant to be a reply to the two above comments. I live in the same general region as the comic’s fictional city. Granted my town is a little more like their first home town.
Once again late to the comment game, but hey, better late than never. Here’s to hoping Robin will still spot this sooner or later. I feel like we’ve been getting much more range of expressions in the last few weeks, as well as a few different facial art styles. I’ve noticed the extra attention, and I’m sure others have too. It adds a fun level of emotion to the comic, truly conveying what each character is feeling from panel to panel. Plus I feel like this is Robin’s way of stretching their legs a little; testing the waters for a new and improved style. Well let me just be the first to say: It’s fantastic. Every time I think Robin couldn’t get any better as an artist, they improve on some small detail that helps bring an already well put together story even further into life. Keep it up my friend. As always, stay awesome!
Oh goodness! Is that a chibi Kai??? My heart’s been completely melted! QwQ He so precious now… You gotta draw more chibi, so adorbs!!!
~Draegon
I love his face on third panel. Lol it’s got a anime style to it that blends well with what just happened.
Unfortunately , Kaya has soiled the scale by having it in her fingers : the doctor needs another sample from Kai
Sorry, buzzkill. Rule of Funny reigns in a comedic scene. Kaya’s hands are completely devoid of sample contamination purely for the sake of the joke.
And if you need justification, assume that the upstuck nurse who reprimanded her over the gown gave her an unnecessarily thorough sanitation just for being presumptuous
Not really. For microscopic examination and sectioning for electron microscopy, some contamination is acceptable as long as it’s accounted for. Contamination is an issue if they were going to do cultures, though…you want to find the infectious agent around the normal flora.
What is said is never as important as who says it. A low-key, unbubbled f-bomb proper would never have conveyed as much emotion as Kai’s open-mouthed boldfaced jagged-font “WHAT THE FOX!”
I don’t know how I managed to typo “how it is said” as “who says it”. How is that even possible.
You’re just…good. 🙂
Can’t let you do that, What The Fox.
in the third panel, kai looks like a cute little kid awwww :3
