Snakey solutions
Cleo has the money, but not the means to convince Kaya :p
Cameo’s in the first panel: Liam and Charlie in the foreground.

Cleo inquiring as to whether it is specifically an Italian restaurant has me theorizing on what exactly she has planned. Current hypotheses include her dad having international contacts (assuming they have the kind of contacts who could help in this situation), knowing a cheap but good-quality supplier to provide the appropriate aesthetic (assuming the missing $50000 isn’t contributing to the structural elements so much as the restaurant fineries), and hoping to raise demand by enlisting the aid of one of those critics who’s really hard to please but is a sucker for a specific type of cuisine (assuming Hybrid City has one) and convincing Marco to let him sample the meal before the restaurant is officially open (assuming demand would help).
That sounds like Ratatouille
Except in Ratatouille they did not -invite- the critic, he just showed up.
Holy Flare, rereading the festival arc and it turns out I frickin’ called it.
Also, excellent use of perspective in panels 1, 3, and 6. It gives a punny literalism to the phrase “look at it from another angle”.
Aww.. You left out my favorite panel!(5) Cleo’s expression, pose, and the perspective combine to make that one special for me. 🙂
The expression and pose are definitely of quality, but I don’t think it’s of a particularly interesting perspective so much as she’s just got her head tilted forward. The ones I numbered were a little more inventive as far as camera* angles go.
*Can you call it a camera angle in a static medium like comics? You know what I mean.
Maybe so; but, I think it actually stands out a bit more because Robin had to work in two different perspectives at the same time in panel 5.
If you look at just Cleo’s head, you are looking at a fairly steeply downward perspective. If you look at just her body you are looking at a perspective closer to level with her or just slightly elevated. The other 3 ‘perspective’ panels use the same perspective throughout the panel.
Just my ‘perspective’. 😉
Guess it’s a difference in how we read. As someone who hates getting dialogue before seeing the image (a hatred borne of slow connections for far too long), I take in the entire scene visually before I move in to look at individual elements. From a work viewpoint, Panel 5 definitely had its demands, but from a reader* viewpoint, I just see Cleo’s posture as a whole, so it doesn’t strike me as visually interesting as 1, 3, and 6.
*Well, MY reader viewpoint. As you pointed out, different people look at it differently.
Oh, heh heh heh,
she’s got a plan,
to give the world
Italian.
She’s not quite sure
that it’ll pay off;
that she’ll deserve
all she can scoff.
(Not that she would,
she’s too refined.
But, then again,
would those two mind?)
That first rhyme is shameless.
(In a good way!)
And, if you say “Italian” in ‘Redneck’, it even has the correct number of syllables! 🙂 🙂
You’re gonna have to walk me through how pronouncing it “Ih-tah-lee-ahn” qualifies as redneck.
Yeeeeee haw! Y’see here boy, in redneck country, we ain’t sayin’ it like you reckon we do – instead, it be “eye-tal-ee-ann.” Fry mah hide!
Okay… but that’s still the same number of syllables. What pronunciation would result in a different syllable count?
The normal American pronunciation basically makes it three syllables: “ih-tal-yun.”
The U.S. is a beeeeeg country, y’all! Yew gotcher Southern rednecks, yer Deep-South rednecks, yer ___Yankee rednecks, yer mid-west rednecks, yer far-west rednecks, yer far-out! rednecks, yer-….. 😉
Welsh Rat’s rhymes have truly brought us together. And we all learned something!
Any bets on whether Cleo will run this past her dad for advise? Or who knows, she may already have a firm enough grasp of finances to tackle this herself after a bit of research.
One possible solution which I can’t recall if it’s been put up yet. Maybe Cleo will recommend Marco delay opening the restaurant for a year or two while going to work for a high end establishment where she and her dad can put in a good word for hiring him. Marco works there for a while and saves as much as he can for the eventual opening of his own restaurant while possibly also impressing a potential client base with his cooking skills.
The rent on the current location is bound to be higher than an apartment alone. Or mortgage payments.
And the group begins the brainstorming. Let’s see what Cleo comes up with. I know that I’M curious to see what she comes up with.
I wonder if Mr. Romero can get a better deal on a loan if he actually takes one big enough to -buy- the building rather than just lease the restaurant and apartment.
One word – Mafia.
We’re talking about Cleo Portas, not Mikako Satsukitane.
To answer the inevitable questions, because I recognize the reference and have yet to meet anyone else who does: Mikako Satsukitane is a secondary character in the manga/anime Heaven’s Lost Property. Student Council President of the main characters’ school, daughter of the head of the local yakuza, and has a lot of red marks in ethics class. On the rare occasion a situation comes up that’s within the scope of mere humans (the word “Heaven” is in the localized title for a reason), her go-to response is “Unleash violence and remind everyone who my father is”.
Either a tasteful bit of Italiana or a pizza place. We’ll have to wait and see
She could provide startup costs for partial ownership. Finding investors for companies isn’t abnormal.
That would mean splitting proffits and for the person running it that being their only income it may not be viable. A lot of new businesses have a first week/month rush then struggle to keep in proffit trying to build repeat business customers. Marketing shouldnt be underestimated so her as a business partner could be a possitive where as any one else would be a negative.
Panel 5: There should be a comma at the end of “loan”.
Jesse’s Adventure: “Instead, I have drawn /these/ RPG /mini-figures/ of them…”
I think that Cleo just founded the offline Kickstarter XD
It would be nice if she advertises the restaurant to an Italian community 🤔
Oh, and the RPG Minifigure style drawing of Jesse is so cuteeee *-*
Now im thinking of lego minifigures of the characters.
Definately feasible with an of brand company though real lego is a long shot to get a set made.
Oh, I would love those lego figures! 😍
Wanting to clarify it was a specific type of restaurant… I wonder what exactly Cleo has in mind? For now I’m going to have to agree with the theories proposed above that she’ll either be referring Marco to a critic or restaurant. I have no new speculations of my own to contribute here. More importantly though, I’d like to continue to remind Robin that we’re here for them. Robin, thank you for your hard work drawing this for us and best of luck to you on your treatment. Your art always brightens up my day and reading the new page of Twin Dragons is always one of the highlights of my week. As always, stay awesome!
New findings suggest that when it comes to learning and cognition, the humble snake may be quite a bit more like humans than anyone had imagined. The King Cobra is one such snake researchers believe to be pretty smart. This species of snake is actually considered the world’s most intelligent snake. The species’ males can establish and recognize land boundaries and defend their territory to the death if another male King Cobra comes on the scene. However, I do not know what species of snake Cleo is,but she must be smart to come up with a solution just by knowing it is an Italian restaurant.
Oi, smartie poo, then why is cleo ready to give money? Why does Kaya not want to get moolah from Cleo? why why why? Can you answer everyone’s questions without looking at them?
As a matter of fact, i might. Not my fault I’m a “Smartie poo”.
(Rolls eyes)
Oh, shut UP.
I mean, you literally have “smart” in your comments name, so it kind of IS your fault. You were free to pick whatever name you wanted.
SHUTUP
She could always ask her dad if he would be interested in becoming an investor in a new restaurant.
or maybe they can plan a fundrasier
I have a feeling Cleo is going to consult her dad, so maybe Cleo’s dad will meet the parents of the twins.
In panel 5 Cleo is finally catching on to what her friends are asking for. Her advice and insight so that they can save the family and not Roots off of her big heartedness and big wallet. After all advice and Insight is something that any friend can give to another.
“Roots”? Did you mean “mooch”, or is this a new usage I need to learn? 🙂 (Serious question!)
It was just autocorrect changing one of my words
Another thought this morning: both of the twins better keep their grades up and earn some scholarships! Mr. & Mrs. Romero might not be as able to help pay for college as much as they would have liked with that debt hanging overhead!
are you still selling the dragon inside shirts?
I am so proud of Kaya for refusing money straight up, and for refusing the loan which almost comes to the same thing.
Loan would be ok … but interest-free loan is same as giving out the interest money.
Cleo: I like to prepay for my next few meals
Restaurant: Sure, how much would you like to pay?
Cleo slaps down 50 grand on the table
LOL! 🙂
Well ; by refusing all from Cleo , Kaya isn’t very helpful about help for the restaurant XD
Kaya’s only refusing all -money- from Cleo. 🙂
she could buy 50% ownership of the dinner for 50k
That’s not a bad idea, but something tells me she has something more inventive in mind. Plus, whether or not that deservedly gets her 50% kind of depends on how big Marco’s original loan was and how much money he poured into it from his own savings.
“So…how would you like your Italians cooked?”
…asked the dragon dubiously, while poking one with a claw.
8-o 😉 🙂
Mario: “From the last time, I may be of Italian descent, but I’m from Brooklyn! Now please, let me get this sink installed!”
