Ooh I’m early! Kaya ear flaps are cute as ever 😁
Funny, I thought it was Kai that torched the curtains in his youth. Though Kaya does seem more like the one to try and do it deliberately.
“I swear, Mom, I just sneezed!”
They both did, if I’m not mistaken. I wonder why baby Dragons are so driven to incinerate curtains and drapes. At least they didn’t burn the carpets and rugs!
In all fairness, I could see myself as a kid setting fire to EVERYTHING if I discovered I could do so.
You can’t be mad at a pyromaniac that cute.
And it’s nice to see the ‘rents, again. Feels like a long time since we last saw them, especially their mom.
It’s fun seeing how authors integrate different works into the same continuity.
College for the twins is probably going to be insane, but they’re still in Middle School for the time being, as far as I can tell, it doesn’t quite seem like they are in High School yet.
No, 14 to 15 is early high school for the U.S. About the only way they would still be in middle school is if they both got held back a year for some reason such as failing grades.
They should be in 9th grade, which would make them high school freshmen.
In the US ages 13-18 are high school years. 13-14 is freshman year, 14-15 is sophomore year, 16-17 is junior year, and 17-18 is senior year.
grades 7-8 are usually referred to as ‘junior high’, 4-6th are called ‘middle school’ and 1-3rd are ‘elementary’.
IIRC, anyway. YMMV.
I suspect it depends on when your birthdate is relative to the start of the school year. I started Kindergarten at age 5, 1st grade at 6, etc. So 9th was 14-15, 10th was 15-16, 11th was 16-17, and 12th was 17-18.
Different school districts do this differently, actually. As there are thousands of different school districts, I’d expect any arrangement of elementary school, middle school, junior high school, and high school that at least includes elementary as the first bit and high school as the last bit that seemed sensible to somebody is done somewhere.
What seemed to me most common back in the day was either elementary school being K-6, middle school being 7-9, and high school being 10-12, or elementary school being K-5, junior high school being 6-8, and high school being 9-12. However, I started elementary school in a district that did elementary school for K-6 and high school for 7-12.
Around the time I was in elementary school, colleges were pushing school districts to have high school for at least four years. My school district capitulated while I was in the sixth grade, so I was in junior high school for grades 7 and 8 only.
As such, I think four or more years for the high school period is probably most common now by a fair margin. But that still leaves a lot of room for differences in the earlier grades.
In all three school districts where I lived through the course of my primary and secondary education, the cutoff time was the end of September. Anyone born in October was thus generally older than most of the rest of the class, and the classmate I had who was born on September 30 was always the youngest. I do not know if that cutoff time was mandated at a particular level or if there just happened to be consensus on that point between three states which weren’t all touching. I also don’t know if that’s changed in the last 30 years.
Belated thought, it might be worth mentioning that I’ve known people who related having been from school district with at least a couple other variations for what grades K-8 were called. One of them had K-8 be entirely elementary school. I’m blanking on what the other one was exactly, but I seem to recall it only had one of ‘junior high school’ and ‘middle school’.
It’s possible, for all I know, that there are only six configurations that school districts have across the country, but it feels to me like this is one of those things that’s going to have a bunch of variation, especially if private schools opt to do it differently from the public school districts they’re in.
That’s how you pick out the top players in a little league team. Younger teams. Those that JUST miss the cutoff end up on a younger team. A year is a LOT at that age, they tend to be top players.
This holds up to and includes major league players. More of them than random choice would suggest have birthdays right after the cutoff date.
Throwing in my configuration, as something that I didn’t know was that different til now, was having K-5 as elementary school, 6-8 as Middle school, and 9-12 as high school. No seperate “junior high” in the region that I know about. A neighboring school had elementary through 6th, then graduating students would transfer to my middle school for 7th & 8th, which I always thought was kind of weird, but it was the same school district. West coast US (CA) for reference.
nice i got here before Welsh Rat that’s a new record for me!
Also i wonder how many items in their old house were burnable, cause I find it hard to believe all Kaya managed to light on fire were the curtains
Also i miss jesse’s adventure ;-;
I was out.
By the time they moved? I’m guessing most durable goods and furniture were probably at least fire resistant.
Going downstairs,
it’s ear flapping time!
Since when was excitement
ever thought a crime?
You doubted her, Kai?
You think she couldn’t?
I’m pretty sure, of course,
you never thought she wouldn’t.
What gifts are here
to allay suspicions?
Gifts, of course, are
some important traditions
Kaya is as adorable as ever here! Really loves her present! Having J.A. being a web series is a great way to work it into the Twin Dragon universe.
I’m looking forward to the next couple comics and seeing if the twins can pick up on any tells from their friends that they have something planned.
Well, they both have massive ears, so hearing any tells won’t be much of a problem! Can’t say the same about their other senses, I’m not sure if they have noses powerful enough to smell any potential tells, and tasting or touching tells are likely nonexistent.
Miss Sabrina returns, hugging her now 15 year old Dragon babies. She and Marco look good for parents of 15 year old Twins (who look like they age at the same rate as Steven Universe), especially half Dragon kids. I’m not surprised that Kaya is the bigger pyromaniac of the Twins, it could be her Dragon instincts but I’m not sure why said instincts would view curtains as a threat.
So Jesse’s Adventure is a web series. I wonder how it compares to fellow web series like Red vs. Blue, Death Battle, and RWBY… Maybe it’s also a RoosterTeeth production?
Before I forget, I made some presents for Kai and Kaya! You can find them here: https://sta.sh/0rerkvm4pxs
Fair warning, they contain a few gag gifts, so they may want to be careful about who they open the presents in front of!
Dude, this is really cool, and I’m kind of sad nobody has acknowledged you for this yet.
P.s. Why can I do this with my name?
Aww, thanks! If you referred to by artwork that I linked, it’s actually the first drawing I’ve completed that I did completely digitally. Normally I draw my stuff by hand first. It was a bit tricky thinking of what to draw for the twins apart from two sets of things.
I’m still debating whether the references to JA in TD count as cameos … so far I’m leaning towards Yes :p
… also because it means I can then add JA to the Archive… 😉
Or have J.A. chars show up later, such as maybe on a poster or we see someone watching an episode either on their computer or smart phone.
given the twin show up in JA in the most recent strips.. i wonder how that would effect things. guest appearance in a show they love? or the webseries being a “fictionalized” account of actual events from the TD world..
Oh, just realized, Rex is a year ahead of them (16) so maybe we’ll see him apply for his driver’s license sometime soon, or perhaps just arrive at school driving his own (actually one of his parent’s) vehicle.
In that case, the Twins should definitely sing “She Drives Like Crazy,” when Rex is behind the wheel!
Kaya lies : i bet she won’t leave her plushie before a very long time ^_^
Title text: “long awaited” should be hyphenated.
“Mother of dragons” – hehe! Seeing how rare mythical hybrids are, and how they had to breath fire to convince the doctors, it seems like these two may be the only dragon hybrids in the world. In that case Sabrina is the mother of all dragons.
I have seen a pair of curtains made of woven fiberglass. Non-combustible cloth (except with fluorine or aggressive fluorine compounds). That should be perfect for a household with dragon toddlers.
You know, the parents should have portable fire extinguishers all over the place, given the kids…….abilities…:)
They’re 15? Wow. For some reason I always thought they were like 12-13, given how short they are compared to their parents. Usually girls reach their maximum height at around 15-16 years old, while boys grow all the way till 18 years old, though most of it tends to happen before the age of 16. I just wonder, if hybrids grow at a different pace, or they are supposed to be shorter than “regular” people in general…
Back during the hospital check up it was noted by Kai’s doc that he was a tad short for his age. Doc surmised it might be due in part to Kai’s massive tail, which is actually longer than his height. A tail that large and long might very well be taking up resources that might have otherwise gone towards making Kai tall like his father.
Yeah, I forgot about the tail mention completely. But on the other hand there’s Drago, who also has large tail, is 16 at most and by my estimates- though very rough, because there’s nothing to directly compare him to- must be about the same height as Marco.
According to the doc the twins are supposed to be 5’1”, or 154 cm (And that’s almost exactly the same as my brother’s 11 yo son). I just took this figure and tried to guess the parents height based on the siluettes while they’re standing next to each other. And my best guess would be Marco is 215 cm (or 7’1”) and Sabrina is about 185 cm (or 6’1”).
Now Benji (as well as the most hybrids) is about the same height as the twins, Cleo even a bit shorter. Rex seems to be just shy of 190 cm (or 6’2”), but he’s one of the few exceptions.
It could also be a side effect of being part Dragon, possessing increased longevity and aging at a slower rate as a result. As a result, the Twins are going through a delayed case of puberty as they age slower due to their draconic/reptilian physiology interacting with their Human physiology.
Did you factor in that they’re kids and possibly not doing their best to stand up straight right now, since they’re not having their height measured right now?
I actually went all the way through the comic and picked most of the pictures where they are next to their parents (and where perspective is unlikely to distort the measurements) and then did the arithmetic mean. Took me almost 4 hours LOL
“Long-awaited?” How long has it been since Sabrina showed up? Have people been asking to see her again?
Wow. There’s more mythicals in Hybrid City than I expected. 😮
World Guide, paragraph 1: “earlier mentioned” should be hyphenated. Also, add commas to “This” and “course” and drop the one from “means”.
Paragraph 2: “can not” should be one word.
Paragraph 3: Drop the comma from “odd”.
Paragraph 4: “…from the species /with which they are associated/.”
Paragraph 6: Add a comma to “which”.
Paragraph 7: Move the comma from “Hybrid” to “and”.
Paragraph 8: “high Hybrid population” should be hyphenated. Also, add a comma to “City”.
Para 1. No.
2. Optional. I tend to agree with you as that’s how it’s normally shown but the rule’s not a fixed one.
3. Correct.
4. Optional. Clears things up but, if you know what the writer is saying, not needed.
6. MOVE the comma there from after Hybrids. It’s an odd one as the comma is a pause for breath but moving it one word doesn’t hurt. having a comma after hybrid AND which makes it read like you have the hiccups(!)
7 Right and for the same reason as above.
8 no need for the hyphenation. If you’re having the comma after City, you also need to move one from Hybrids to after but.
I hate punctuation at times(!)
EDIT. No to the first in Para 1. Yup to the others.
I thought that curtains were pretty much required to be flame resistant.
Borrowing from the Fred the Vampire series – in THAT universe, Wendigo’s would be all white. Assuming I remembered the word correctly.
Most imaginary species vary from author to author, with very few exceptions.
Also from Fred series, Sabrina could be nicknamed “Tiamat” I suppose. Mother of dragons.
These days, yes. They didn’t used to be. If we extend comic time back to the time when Kai and Kaya were little kids. Wait, they’re still pretty little, as discussed above. Very little, is that better? Assuming comic time, with the update rate we have, and looking back retrospectively, Kai and Kaya would’ve been baby dragons at some point significantly before curtains were required to be fire resistant.
That said, the word is “resistant”, not “proof”. Also, they’re dragons. Dragon fire is generally considered fairly hot as fire goes.
From a different perspective, with the particular mechanism by which their fire is implemented, it’s something similar to a self-igniting napalm. There is therefore a core part of their dragons fire that is a physical and possibly sticky substance. If they’re not trying to blow fire particularly hard, it all burns before it lands. But if they were forceful enough and diligent enough, it seems like they could get some of that liquid flame onto the drapes. At that point, the fire resistance likely can only endure for so long.
As far as Tiamat goes, that’s not from the Fred the Vampire series. If I remember correctly, Tiamat dates back to before we had a proper concept of dragon. Tiamat was the mother of all dragons in part because the concept of dragon came about in part trying to explain what Tiamat was, or possibly what her children were. Yes, there were mythoi that gave us dragons but not Tiamat. I am not aware of those other mythoi presenting an original female dragon who could take on that role, but I’d guess that’s more of an issue with my breadth of knowledge than their actual lack of existence.
Researching this is apparently a bit more daunting now, as apparently Game of Thrones has put their own name in the pot for that particular title. While I don’t know for certain that Daenerys did not have an ancient basis (other than maybe taking inspiration from Tiamat – I don’t know, I haven’t read that series), as far as I can tell, she didn’t exist before George R.R. Martin wrote his books. If she did, he effectively google-bombed her prior existence more effectively than he google-bombed the title “mother of all dragons”. Still, even if she did, 7000 years is a fairly tough record to beat, and Tiamat goes back at least that far.
Not suggesting Fred series is only place that mentions Tiamat, just that it’s the one I have seen, other than D&D. In the Fred series, they have something call Therians, like werewolves, just with multiple species. The local therian leader is a were lion. Every so often, a therian is born with dragon as their alternate form. These Tiamats are capable of giving birth to full blooded dragons, at a much much greater rate than a normal dragon female. So, mother of dragons.
The legend more or less matches most other sources, sort of “the first dragon”.
We talked about the twin’s fire once in comments. What is the word – pyrophoric. Had to look it up. This fits the evidence in comic better than hypergolic mixture of two chemicals.
Fiberglass curtains would be basically fire proof. They might melt, but would never burn. Have no idea about Nomex. Of course, they are still cloth, if you get enough fuel on them, the fuel will burn. I’m guessing that fire is a significant hazard with a toddler dragon. Yikes.
Tiamat , IIRC, comes from ancient Babylonian/Sumerian mythos. Tiamat was supposed to have been the mother of all demons, IIRC.
YMMV, of course. I am no expert on the subject.
The way it’s told in Enuma Elish, Tiamat is the mother of pretty much everything.
Tiamat is the female principle and the primeval saltwater. Apsu is the male principle and the primeval freshwater. As their waters mix, a world begins to emerge, personified as several generations of gods, each surpassing their parents.
The young gods are so noisy that Apsu and Tiamat can’t get any rest. Apsu tries to destroy the young gods, and is defeated. Tiamat is initially unwilling to go against her descendants, but eventually even she has enough of the noise. She creates several kinds of monsters to serve as her army, and goes to war. Tiamat is slain, and an organized world is constructed from her corpse. Thus the ocean serves as the mythical chaos monster that must be killed to bring order to the world.
One kind of monsters that Tiamat creates has been translated as “dragons”, but the appearance of these dragons isn’t described in Enuma Elish, except that they are fearsome and godlike. How Mesopotamians imagined Tiamat is also uncertain. It may be that she was pictured with some dragon-like properties, or that may more of a projection from modern culture. I believe the stereotypical scaly, winged, fire-breathing dragon is a more recent development.
The nature of mythology is of course that beliefs vary and morph boundlessly, as there is no underlying reality to keep the myths in check.
On the topic of this week’s vote incentive: I’ve actually wondered how they were able to confirm the Phoenix kid as a Phoenix ethically. Flash paper feathers works well enough
“Flash paper feathers”. Now I’m imagining Phoebe using her feathers to recreate that scene from Now You See Me where Jack hurls flash paper at Dylan while he puts some distance between them. Like, swing an arm at her pursuer to knock a feather or two loose, leave him recoiling while the feather goes up.
I just noticed this after reading through all the comments. I really liked that movie.

I wonder: Instead of wings I wonder if Kaya could achieve flight using her ears.
Kinda like a cuter Dumbo? 🙂
Still nothing has gone wrong in this chapter…
Now that I think about it, “burned” probably means “scorched”. Actual spreading flames is something he would remember.
