Good, was hoping Lizzy wouldn’t simply go along with things! Now what is she willing to do to try and stop Larissa? What will Larissa do to get her to either go along or not interfere? Looking forward to next week already!
Hopefully Liz is smart enough to -not- threaten to turn Larissa & Dinah in. They’d just hurt her, probably badly. I’d have her just say something like, “Fine; do what you have to, but leave me out of it.” THEN, once she’s clear of Larissa, go in secret to Mr. Romero, or the police. Or even Nate? 🙂 But don’t wait too long, Liz!
” I’d have her just say something like, “Fine; do what you have to, but leave me out of it.” THEN, once she’s clear of Larissa, go in secret to Mr. Romero, or the police.”
Yup and just stay in the restaurant/coffee shop until Larissa and Dinah leave. It’s unlikely they would try to do anything to Liz while she stays inside as that might draw unwanted attention before Larissa can go after the food truck.
That or grab the jar right now, smash it on the wall, or the sidewalk outside.
Lizzy has her limits of what she is willing to do ^^
Robin, I have Returned, I read all the new comics in like 10 minutes. I love your work. Keep going!
The argument is raging now,
between friend and lunatic
as one tries to bring in some sense
and one wants to make people sick.
It’s the final bell tolling here
for the notorious dumb girls three
as one shows she has quite a brain
and struggles to fight her way free.
Sometimes you can’t help people, Liz;
sometimes the bridges just have to burn.
But, with no-one turning to help,
is this a lesson you can learn?
Poor Liz has learned a lesson the hard way,
In being the conscience for her friends.
After this harsh realization, surely with them she won’t stay.
Acting as the conscience to friends who already have none,
Is a sure sign that these girls aren’t friends to keep,
Especially when this disproportionate vengeance is their fun.
And as for Larissa, whom TV Tropes has recognized as a sociopath,
She’s about to learn the hard way that her empty vengeance shall bring her nothing but pain.
Especially when ruining the Romero Twins lives is what gives her a laugh.
Really, from this path of hatred, there is nothing good for her to gain.
There’s a reason you don’t bully Dragons, actual half Human ones no doubt,
For if you manage to enrage them, you may be reduced to a pile of ash.
Good thing the Twins are too kind hearted to send you from this life out,
But still your future’s grim if you keep denying that it’s all your fault.
At best or worst, my foreboding sense says for you this will not end well,
For unlikely as it will result in your demise, you still have doomed yourself to he-….!
This is a turning point for Liz, she’s getting to see just how horrible the people she called her friends really are. She’s probably just now realizing how toxic Larissa is, and her other friend (I can’t recall her name at the moment) is more of an enabler than anything else. Liz is supposedly the voice of reason in the group, but the others just ignore her input anyway. And when Cleo was part of the group, she just went along with things because she didn’t want to be lonely, she probably got a right earful from her dad when she finally separated from the group over her poor choices, his lecture might have even been more intense than she anticipated.
Liz is probably going to run to the twins and Cleo and warn them about Larissa’s ill-advised revenge scheme. And also pile on a mess of apologies to both Cleo and Kaya. Cleo knows those 3 pretty well, she spent quite a few years with them so it makes sense she would get a good idea of their personality profiles, especially with how business-oriented her thinking seems to be, so she should have a good idea of how Liz is as an individual. Not to mention, the little snippet about Liz’s background recited to her back during the tail end of the museum arc. Nate might even vouch for Liz, given what he seems to know about her, and say something about her being there warning them all about one of her friends should be an indicator of just how serious the coming problem is.
The other friend is called Dinah ^^
It certainly is a turning point for little Lizzy here.
Yep, and Dinah is more of an enabler than anything else. Did you intend for Dinah to be an enabler?
Lizzy needs to do the right thing and warn the others. But I’m worried in that last frame that she lacks the willpower to defy Larissa so directly.
I’m worried about what Larissa would do to her if she does have the willpower.
liz not arguing further might very well be self preservation – she knows just what larissa is capable of after all, and unlike kaya has no dragon strength to protect herself with.
lets be honest, between this and the assault in the museum – for which she´s still suspended! – larissa is well on her way to getting expelled, and might even find herself in front of a judge
Larissa is bigger and stronger than Lizzy, so she might not really be willing to stand up to her directly. There’s willpower, but then there’s Larissa.
Well , Lizzie has made a mistake by saying she wasn’t for it . Now , Larissa (and Dinah) will surely try to neutralize her before she warns the twins
Totally depends on if Larissa thinks about that :p
I’m surprised that Larissa knows that much about the Romeros. I agree with Liz, Larissa’s scheme is horrifically disproportionate to what Kaya did, which was only shove Larissa in self defense and accidentally use her self defense mechanism against Larissa’s hair. Larissa is a grade A sociopath and complete dumbass, willing to ruin a nice family’s lives over a grudge that was her own fault. If there was any reason to fight back against her before, I’m sure the authorities (and the school principal) would be ok with giving this soulless bi+©π a good slug in the eye.
The twins didn’t seem at all shy about admitting they came from a backwater town with no other hybrids.
I think that town would work a lot better for Larissa than it would for the twins, given that Larissa isn’t a hybrid.
Authorities tend to prefer keeping things in ‘status quo’, which includes the bit about most people not punching other people… in part, because the jobs that make up ‘the authorities’ tend to attract sociopaths and most other people just want to go about their business and not worry about big picture stuff. As a result, changing the situation to “it’s ok to punch sociopaths in the face” would not work out well for the authorities.
Larissa sent to a town where the residents probably haven’t replaced all the old lead pipes in their water supply… That won’t do any favors for her mental health
I’m pretty sure a reasonable police officer would let Kai or Kaya lightly slugging Larissa given that it’s a lot less harsh than what she was planning, since I believe they’d consider Larissa the instigator as her actions would have really hurt the Romero family.
Let Kai or Kaya lightly slugging Larissa slide. Sorry, I forgot to add that part. Given that Larissa is the would be instigator of this potential scuffle, she’d be the one in trouble with the cops.
“Accidentally use her self defense mechanism”
I’m pretty sure it was NOT accidental xD
… Fair point. Though Kaya did go overboard with flame breath, she could’ve just let out a small flame or snorted smoke or fire out her nostrils (if she can do that) as a form of intimidation and showing why exactly it’s a bad idea to pick a fight with a girl who’s half fire breathing mythical reptile who’s not out for blood; if that had set Larissa on fire, it would have either been a freak accident on Kaya’s part if she didn’t intend on burning someone with her extreme case of “Dragon breath” (she should probably lay off the onion bagels and the sauce) or Larissa’s fault for being stupid enough to approach an open flame, even if it was only meant as a small demonstration. To paraphrase what an infamous pirate* once said, “Observation, fighting spirit, and intimidation. These are the normal combative instincts all people have.” I’m pretty sure Kaya and Kai can’t use all three colors of Haki, but the intimidation thing would have helped avoid any fights with a certain sociopathic pinhead.
*Silvers Rayleigh
Liz, I think it’s time you left these two.
Yes, you were friends up ’til now, but if they keep this up, you’ll feel nothing but unhappy.
I think she’s starting to realize at this point.
Go, Liz! You don’t have to tolerate any more of this psychopath’s bulls#!+ if she’s going this far.
Yeah, no need to stay around.
Holy Flare. When I said Larissa was irredeemable, I didn’t think her SOUL was so set for damnation. I thought she was just trying to hurt Kaya and Kai, not drive the entire Romero family out of Hybrid City. That is a straight-up evil, unrelentingly apathetic, incomprehensively selfish, “yes, I DO want to have a bad time” level of violence that I was not quite prepared for.
She’s totally walking down the path of “not caring who she hurts so long as she gets what she wants.” Which is worrying because when this plan likely fails she’s not going to just give up, she’ll likely try something even more extreme. When she’s a couple years older I can definitely see Larissa as the type of person people file protective orders against, wouldn’t be surprised either if she actually does time behind bars as an adult.
At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if she does time behind bars NOW.
It’s likely she’s gonna have a protective order (i.e. a restraining order) placed against her NOW! Or at least after the Food Festival. That’s something the adults and Cleo can arrange, it would be the least of Larissa’s worries as this could even give her a lot of criminal charges. I feel sorry for her poor parents, having to live with the knowledge that their own daughter is such a sociopath, if they aren’t anything like her and actually care about their undeserving daughter and other people.
The word you’re looking for is sociopath. At best. She has marked herself as trash. She and her shitstained friend who thinks this is a good idea. And that is their names from now on afaic.
“Her soul was set for damnation”
I like that one xD Didn’t even think of it like that :p
That requires Larissa to have a soul in the first place, even if it’s a tiny and malformed core of life energy, full emotional range, empathy, consciousness, and experiences. The description I gave is what I view the soul of a person like Larissa would “look” like. I’m not saying for certain she’s completely soulless, but she does act like it.
Soul or not, Larissa certainly seems to be missing some kind of ‘filter’ for her thinking.
As well as a conscience, empathy, and any redeeming qualities.
There’s no way she’s not going to help them right? Even if it’s temporary
I don’t know what you’re smoking. There is not a snowball’s chance in hell that Liz is going to have anything to do with Larissa’s plan after seeing just how off her rocker this whackjob is.
Panel 1: There should be a comma at the end of “No”.
Not necessarily.
Commas are used, among other things, to indicate separate thoughts and denoting pauses. If she is essentially saying “I disagree (No), that’s not right (it isn’t.).” then a comma is needed, but if she’s saying it with the meaning of “That’s not right(No it isn’t.)”, no comma is needed.
We also have to take into account if Robin is writing this based on proper grammar or an individuals way of speaking. If it is the latter, then adding a comma provides a false impression that Liz is pausing, rather than blurting everything at once.
*to denote, not denoting
Pardon any typos, I typed this quickly.
On the one hand, I’m relieved that she’s only putting this on her own plate, and not sabotaging the food making process (mass attempted poisoning is probably not something she wants on her record)…
On the other hand it’s still vil and on the other-other hand, with the sheer number of witnesses (not to mention, possibly cameras, both pocket and other), I’m struggling to imagine how she thinks she will get away with this without a major, probably illegal, distraction (with a fly, or something pocket size, you can sleight of hand it in, with this… 0_0), especially now that she has to somehow stop someone aware of the plan from spilling it.
It’ll be an interesting next few pages for sure.
…I still really hope they shape up someday.
At this point, I am thinking that she isn’t considering criminal charges; she just wants her revenge, consequences be damned.
An invisible onlooker?
I for one see Larissa as someone who screws up her own life and sadly will see the inside of a prison and still blame someone else for her own actions. 🙁 And I hope Liz can get away from them and warn someone without them doing something vindictive to her… I feel she could actually be good friends with Cleo and the twins if she really gave them a chance.
I too feel that Liz would like to be friends with Cleo again and how she handles things here may just affect that. She’s got a very important choice to make in the next comic or two.
Liz needs to grab that jar and get out of there. Or at least push it off the table.
Or smash it in Larissa’s face.
MAYbe grab it and run; but, do NOT smash it inside an innocent bystander’s restaurant.
Doing anything with the jar could easily go very badly for Liz. If she breaks the jar, it’s her fault. If she runs off with it, it’s stealing.
Sure, under the circumstances, it’s arguably the right thing to do, as the act obstructs a worse crime. But being a defendant in a legal case is only very rarely a good idea, if you can avoid it. Regardless of how good your case is, it can still go wrong. Also, in this situation, Liz being a defendant in a legal case would leave Larissa free to act without interference from Liz.
One possibility – open the jar, recoil in horror, and “accidentally” drop it. Oops, clumsy me. Or don’t open it. Pick up and “oops”. Depends on floor. If tile, that could work.
Or smash it in Larissa’s face.
^Robin, could you delete that one and this one? I had issues with my Wi-Fi while I was posting.
As someone who works in food service, Larissa wouldn’t merely drive the Romero’s out of town, the dad’s license and ability to cook anywhere might be ruined. I sincerely hope that Lizzy gets word to the proper authorities, otherwise, this will end badly for all.
@Turtimus I’ve read stories that school authorities hardly care about fairness in these kinds of cases (zero-tolerance policies). It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if the school only suspended Larissa less to punish her and more to cover their own rears.
Ok, the right thing for Liz to do here is to call Nate and say she needs a favour – not saying that’ll be the easy thing, but it is one of the right things.
My vision for the next page:
Health Inspector: [ Inside the HUGE food truck ] Well, Mr. Romano. Everything checks out. Here are your permits for the weekend. Good luck with the festival. [ Opens side door of the food truck and steps out, just as Larrisa throws the contents of her jar at the side of the food truck, covering the side of the truck, the inspector and some of the inside in fish guts. ] What the … Young Lady, you will clean this up immediately!
Larrisa: Hah, you can’t make me. Who do you think you are? The Food Police?
Health Inspector: Well, since you put it that way; Yes, I am the food police! I’m the health inspector and you are under arrest for assault. The police will inform you of your rights when they arrive.
Wow, someone with an actual brain. You have to love it when a villain isn’t as dumb as a sack of hammers
Hail, the snark-master has passed his judgement, and grand sarcasm is ours to witness once again!
(I am of course assuming you’re referring to Larissa and ARE being sarcastic, and are not mistakenly classifying Liz as still being of a villainous party.)
Liz just made a fatal mistake. Larissa will let her go, but only as someone to take the fall should things go wrong.
Not that these plans won’t backfire on Larissa…and with the twins around, there’s emphasis on fire.
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!!!!!
I think this would be an excellent opportunity for a scene change to follow one of the other threads of this chapter for a while; who’s with me? ~
As the audience, we have less than no right to determine what path the story should take or what order the plot threads should be presented to us. That decision falls to the creator of the story, and is probably decided well in advance. If Robin has already decided for the next page to be a scene change, then you’ll get your wish. If Robin has decided to continue this scene at present, then we are not permit to attempt to change his mind.
My comment was meant to be tongue-in-cheek; I know I have no right to demand how the story plays out~
Liz: “No, Larissa, I might not be your boss…but I do own 51% of your stock!”
Larissa: “What…how?!”
Liz: “Remember all of those times we played Monopoly with Cleo? Turns out we still had the lawyer on retainer!”
Larissa: “CURSES!”
Looks like Liz has finally reached her breaking point. Good. It’s about time she took a hardline approach and made her feelings clear, regardless of what she might be facing now. I do sincerely hope that Larissa doesn’t manage to intimidate her into silence, but honestly considering how much forethought we’ve seen her display thus far I doubt Larissa would even consider the fact that Liz might warn them. (At least as long as Liz knows to hold her tongue at this point and doesn’t keep arguing in the next panel.) … all in all in the grand scheme of things this is just a comic, but the fact that I genuinely only just now remembered that while midway through typing this comment and it wasn’t just an intentional shift in feeling truly shows how detailed and realistic this comic is. I feel like I’m doing an actual behavioral analysis and trying to make suggestions to real people when at the end of the day it’s a work of fiction. You truly do have an incredible talent for world and character building Robin. It never ceases to amaze me or leave me lost in thought. Keep up the awe-inspiring level of work and, as always, stay awesome!
I know I taunted you during the dream chapter for sounding like a eulogy in your comments, but you’re absolutely right about how engaging the characters are in this comic. The level of relatability in this world Robin has created makes you want to jump in and lend a hand.
Agreed, I’m not the biggest fan of slice of life stories, this one being a big exemption because of how well it’s written (not to mention great comedic timing)
Time to find new friends.
Or will Kaya (or Cleo) find you first? 🙂
One of my main problems is that I overthink things enormously. But I don’t think Larissa is thinking this out enough. Kai, Kaya, Benji etc. are real friends to Cleo, they like her for herself, not how much money they can get out of her. Also, Cleo is in a partnership with their dad. Ruin them like that, and she’s gonna want some payback.
So you have to ask yourself, Do you really want someone with that much money angry with you?
