Did… did Kai just rip his paper by lifting his pen too quickly? How does that even work?
I think he was pressing the pen down just as Kaya “entered” the room, and his jump pushed it forward before it came off the paper during the follow-through.
Given Kai’s hybrid strength, I’d be worried not just for the top sheet of paper, but the rest of the writing pad as well!
it was the movement over the paper that ripped it ^^’
It looks like she shocked him mid pen stroke, so he was also applying pressure to the page then pushed through and up.
The birthday fun has ended, so our heroes now prepare
To face the deadliest of foes: Exam time! But beware,
A panicked Kaya, fearful of the terrifying test, bursts in
And causes Kai to mess his paper up, to his chagrin.
Can our draconic twins defeat this yearly stress-filled fright?
Let’s hope their floofy friends will stand with them and join the fight!
I like your verse. The rhymes are fine. The rhythm is good, but wait!
There is a line I’d like to change, and that one is the third.
The other lines are fourteeners and flow like in a song.
The third has sixteen syllables, which makes the line too long.
I think replacing “terrifying” with a trochee word
like “dreaded”, maybe “scary” or some such would make it great.
Oh, this is going to be good…
…also, she broke the door off its hinges. That’s not good.
But it’s cartoon damage, so all is fine 😀
Cartoon damage? These kids have insane strength, I’d say it’s feasible.
The dreaded date for a dragon dawns,
the evil examination extravaganza.
Where studious studies seldom succeed
when sisters stalk soporific stanzas.
The studious study such a style,
remembering, recalling and recollecting
whilst woolly-minded wanderers
start dithering, distracting and deflecting.
Their study style sets a scene;
destroying desired determination.
One champ chooses to challenge change
and one fires forth futile fascination…
You’re still The King, Welshie! 😉
so school goes yaer-round in Hybrid city, I guess? My USA-centricness is showing…
In much of the world – including England where I live – the school year ends at the last week of July and starts the first week of September.
I can only assume it’s similar in Hybrid Cuty…
*City*!
I think Robin the author is from Belgium. There summer vaction lasts from early July to late August and afterwards the new school year starts.
What Baltor said. I’m basing the school system on what I know, and summer break here is july and august. I was under the impression (I asked some US citizens) that this was about the same thing over there, but I guess there are differences even across the US.
I can attest to this where I live we end school in late May and start in early august only rarely has school ended in June and that’s caused by too many hazardous weather days, I.e. snow, ice, flooding, etc.
It’s changed quite a bit, when I was in school, it was June to late September. (60s to 70s) But that was due to the farm kids that had to help with harvest. Thanks to automation, these days it only takes 2 people that can drive on the roads to harvest a field.
At my first school (Ludlow Elementary, Shaker Heights, Ohio; mid-1960s) the school year began on the first Monday in September (this was before all federal holidays other than Thanksgiving and Christmas were mandated to fall on a Monday) and ended on the third Friday in May. This was pretty much the pattern for all my subsequent schools, although with a slightly later start after Labor Day became the first Monday in September, and the school year ending in late May or early June depending on how badly Snow Days had encroached into the school calendar. Nowadays, where I live (Indianapolis, Indiana), school starts in mid-August, takes a nine week break from mid-November to the week after New Year’s Day, and continues (with holiday breaks) until the first week in June.
My LAST school was Bedstone collage (Boarding School) in Shropshire. For small worldness, the closest town? Ludlow.
Here in Western Australia, school’s 4th term started Monday just gone. From memory, it finishes around start of December for Summer Holidays, with the new school year starting in February. Our seasons are the opposite than those in the Northern Hemisphere…
Up here in Canada, the school year usually ends in June and begins in August.
I live in Canada and it used to be September.
School-year is longer than it used to be here in North Carolina too. The kids seem to be getting more days off -during- the school year though.
Ah, final exams. What a time to be alive.
I always had quite a good time during exams, but I am really good at studying xD
Same here, I just sucked at doing homework, I HAD a photographic memory of sorts, (not so much these days, getting old SUX) and would often be made to prove it. Embarrassing as all hell when you are made to read the board, turn my back and recite it to the entire class. Perfectly… sigh…
All the doors in this house had a disposition that was cheerfull and sunny like a nice summer afternoon in June. It was their pleasure to open for you, and their satisfaction to close again with the knowledge of a job well done.
That was until they met Kaya.
Btw, does Kai’s chair have a hole for a tail or does he let it hang off to his left?
It has a hole for his tail ^^
“Don’t you ever knock?!”
Why am I not surprised that Kaya needs Kai’s help with studying? Interesting way to begin a chapter, showing off the twins’ super strength, with the door being busted open and Kai tearing his paper with just a mechanical pencil. I’m surprised the pencil survived that last part. The twins probably will need to learn how to control their super strength better as they grow up and their strength increases. By the way, I wonder if Kai is a straight A student… Are any of the twins’ friends in that category as well?
“You fool! You see what OPENING does, do you really want her to KNOCK?!”
xD
You will see a glimpse of how well the main characters do at exams during the chapter ^^
She can control her strength, right? She can just knock gently. Doesn’t Kaya have a sense of privacy?
I’m guessing it’s been about 15 years since the Romero family has gotten a security deposit back.
@Robin:
To be clear, I’m NOT complaining about the start of a new chapter…
… I’m just puzzled by the previous page.
It feels like a story line was ended in mid-sentence, in order to start this one.
Well, it was a stupid joke I came up with on a whim, and it ended with just the godzilla reference. I couldn’t put it in one page because it needed to introduce the new kitty hybrid as well. I can see how it feels like an abrupt ending, but it only needed to deliver the godzilla line ^^
In the starting-blocks : the p*ssing off sister who understand nothing and come to ask for help from her brother ………. ^_^”
I broke down a door once. My mom freaked out. It was years before the damage was repaired.
How appropriate that exams should be the subject of Chapter 13. Unlucky for Some indeed!
In my case, it never helped that exams took place during peak hay fever season. ‘Snot conducive to learning.
The chapter also starts in a week with a Friday 13th.
Exam time is here
The twins and their friends study
To pass their classes
Kai’s about to start
Making notes on some subject
When Kaya breaks in
The door is dead now
She broke it off its hinges
Why didn’t she knock?
The friends, they study,
Not getting much sleep tonight,
“Knock-Knock!” “Who’s there?” “ME!!”
It’s one of those things where an old wives’ tale is only close to on the mark. They’re right about the effect, but not the cause.
Video games don’t cause violence.
Music doesn’t cause violence.
Neither TV nor movies cause violence.
EXAMS CAUSE VIOLENCE.
It’s like one of the things the D.A.R.E. officer doesn’t tell you, but few people actually learn until they take a pharmacology class. Doing drugs COULD kill you…learning about drugs WILL kill you.
