Language barrier
A new hybrid! Seems like she has trouble with the language.

Oh wow. What are the odds?
About 100% I guess. After all they loaded Chekhov’s gun last week.
Annabella the Pokétrainer
sends her hero to fight;
helping out the helpless,
putting things to right.
Someon needs assistance
(and not to be jumped on)
learning their way around…
you know, that old song?
There’s hope incoming
to aid her in her chat.
Just know one thing, Kai…
It’sfine to praise the hat.
Diolch yn fawr iawn.
What’s that even mean?
“Thank you very much” in Cymraeg (Welsh).
Maybe Kai might be heading for a summertime romance. She’s CUTE.
Summer love, had me a blast/
Summer love, happened so fast/
Met a girl, crazy for me/
Met a buy, cute as can be/
Summer days, drifting away, but uh-oh, those summer nights”
…and, of course, the comment went in the wrong place. Feh.
All it needs is a bouncy, optimistic tune backing it and you have a new Pokémon theme song.
Please tell me one of the readers studies music theory…
“Under The Alolan Moon” is neither of those things.
New friend! And yeah, Kai be like that, he’s a good guy.
That little wolf looks familiar… Is that Emily Winter? I didn’t expect to see her in this chapter! Though on closer inspection, that’s a different girl. She seems to be rather shy… Luckily for her, she has another Hybrid present (two, in fact) that can provide translation.
I see Annabella likes Pokémon, just like Kai and Kaya, apparently she’s a Dragon type trainer, though only for once a year if her cousins are her Pokémon.
Did Kai finish his panini in one bite during panels 4 and 5?
Did Kaya’s panini get longer in that time?
There is a drawer under Kai’s chair which Italians in that lore use to store half-eaten food so no flies/birds get it. He is just pushing it in.
I wonder why their mother is there, all of a sudden.
That’s not their mom, that’s their cousin.
His panini was not properly defended, and so became a part of Kaya’s panini.
This new girl is adorable! And it’ll be fun to see Kai swoop in and save the day. Better be careful, she could fall head over heels for a suave Italian hybrid who rescued her lunch.
OF COURSE Sofia can’t understand them, they are holding a hat with both hands. Can’t speak proper italian without vigorous hand gesturing.
Good on Kai for going to help the new hybrid, the last thing s/he needs is Cobra Kaya terrorizing them
And so a new hybrid arrives. Maybe a potential new friend.
And yes, I agree that Kai is the better/best choice for greetings and translation. Otherwise we may see a pouncing from Kaya.
Panel 6: Add a comma to “Go”.
Nice touch in writting “more slow” to show her bad italian
It would be awkward if she doesn’t speak English either! How is Kai’s French? 😀
One of her word bubbles did not have the tiny little Italian flag on it. Hence it was English.
I really like the way you made her pupils narrow in width only, as opposed to just shrinking them to pinpoints like we’ve seen Kaya’s do. It has a nice effect!
“Go Kai, I choose you!”
“Kai! Kai kai! Kaaaai!”
“Quick, use Translate!”
“Kai!”
*Several minutes of him standing between them saying only Kai, yet somehow it does the job….*
“Great work Kai. Return!”……
….
….Sorry, this was the first thing that came to mind when I read this page, had to write it down… 😋
I hadn’t thought about how the “battle” would go, but I also thought of Pokémon.
Very cute. She should be popular.
It’s easier to identify the language by color – english has white background, italian has light green. But yeah, you are right – and that’s why were a remark there about Sofia’s english.
Ah yes, the survival phrases. 😆 Gotta wonder how the new customer learned them if even those have incorrect grammar. 🤔 Dictionary?
It’s been years since I traveled internationally, but you used to be able to get the little booklets with the more common phrases used in a particular country. Very rudimentary but was enough to get by.
So tempted to publish one like the one on Monty Python.
My hovercraft is full of eels.
I sense a ship coming in ^^;

She’s gonna look real cute riding on the back of the scooter, arms wrapped around Kai’s chest, with that fluffy tail blowing in the wind.
How about …tails entwined?
I’m up for that. Kai probably is too.
{squawking in Kai/Clementine}
Naan, Clementine seems to have something going on with her camera guy/handler Zeke.
There are pictures of them that make it look like they are a couple.
This perversely reminds me of the Monty Python sketch with the English / Hungarian dictionary. Some of the sketch was in fact done in Hungarian if I recall correctly. The book’s writer ends up in court.
Well, a (correct) phrase book helps you with what you say but it does not help you much with comprehending the answer given speed of speech, dialect and so on.
By the way, for those of you who don’t know or fully remember the sketch: https://python.mzonline.com/sketches/hungarianphrasebook/
Bleh. No. Having friendly conversation is not the same as flirting. Being nice isn’t putting on the moves.
I agree. A boy and his friends once thought I was into him because I was spending time listening to his stories. I was just being nice.
Hum… difficult to tell. Is the lass a cat or a skunk? (They *do* have such interesting markings)
