Is Angel an angler fish hybrid?
Looks like it.
She is 😀
Now for the important question:
Can she breathe underwater?
…also, what’s her pressure tolerance like?
No obvious gills on the neck, unless she has some on her sides I doubt she has any. And the changes to the ribs needed for torso gills would push the limits of what we’ve seen the phenomenon can do.
Plus, the human circulatory system is much too large for gills as we know them to properly supply with oxygen. If humans were to grow gills, they’d be tendrils trailing behind us about as long as we are tall. It would be more efficient if we had “micro gills” consisting of bursae lining areas close to blood vessels, like Turtles have (particularly around their cloacas).
Huh, interesting. The image I got in my head after reading that was an aquatic humanoid with long gills on top of their head instead of hair.
That seems convenient for reading in darkness.
Wonder if she can turn it off and on? Can’t turn it off could get annoying (I think Daniel the Human wishes he could switch me off at times. Too bad… 😋) and doesn’t turn on just leaves a dangly thing in her vision all the time…
Tell me, when’s the last time you saw your nose, and why was it just now when you started thinking about it?
I doubt her lure even registers in her vision when she’s not thinking about it.
Oh, that thing was really annoying when I 1st started looking Human. Took me a while to realise it’s the same thing as on my metal face, just kinda peach coloured. Some Cybertronians don’t even HAVE mouths or noses, just a armoured panel. Well, I guess they could have them underneath, but they don’t suddenly turn pink…
I don’t think it’s giving THAT much light. It may barely protect her from hitting walls in dark.
I’d expect that she’d also have pretty good night vision, given that she’s a hybrid based on a deep sea critter, where the only light would be various bioluminescent critters, so she might be able to read by it…
Rather cute. Looks like the dangly bit is all there is. Mouth normal size, no obvious gills. When Bujold had a gilled character, the gills were in his chest walls.
It’s subtle, but if you zoom in you can see her teeth are a bit spike-like. Other than that though, seems it’s just the scales and the lure.
Why is she supposed to say that, Viper?
You think he can’t understand banter?
He doesn’t seem hurt by the sniper.
He’s getting fries to go with his Fanta
(Other Orange soft drinks are available)
He doesn’t need anyone to fight his fights;
he’s strong enough to stand on his own.
He knows it’s in fun and not against his rights;
he’s the controller in his immediate zone.
(Other controllers may be nearby)
Don’t fight the fights that aren’t there.
Don’t defend when no defence is needed.
If you do you’ll be fighting everywhere
until all possible battles are conceded.
(Other battles are always forming)
To be fair, regardless of whether the project is original or not, Drago does have the benefit of a prehensile tail that’ll allow for a much more impressive endeavour.
Drago: Mask on, mask off, mask on, mask off.
Random stranger: What’s the difference?
And yeah I remember reading that costumes like that do get pretty hot. IIRC the original actor who wore the Godzilla suit was able to tolerate it because previously he had worked in a factory that made rubber or rubber products and that’s pretty hot work too. No wonder Drago went right for the water bottle as soon as he got the head piece off!
If he needs to stay in it, you can get gear to keep you cool. Many fur suit people wear them, as do some that work in hot places. Basically belts or vests that hold little sacks of stuff that freezes. Water would work.
Suits with cooling systems can cost as much as a car though
It’s just little bags of something to freeze. Should not be expensive.
Not talking about the ones with tubes and a pump. Just little plastic pouches full of ice.
Sorry, I missed the ice belts and such.
Well, for starters Drago’s skull/head is narrower and has a longer snout compared to his less spherical head; not to mention having a lighter green skin tone and dirty blonde hair.
I don’t think he cares as long as there are free snacks.
Indeed, he has found the craft services table. He may not be destroying the city, but he will do a number on the food.
Nature has shown again and again…….
You know the rest.
>:)
Panel 4: There should be a comma at the end of “costume”.
Sorry, my friend, no cigar on that one. He’s neither pausing nor inserting unnecessary words. No comma needed in this case.
Is Angel an Angler Fish? That species has some interesting features; their sexual dimorphism is pretty considerable, in favor of the female, and that’s to say nothing about the way they procreate; the less said about that, the better.
Angel’s lure is actually bio luminescent, that looks like it could come in handy! I hope there aren’t any male Angler fish Hybrids, ’cause that would suck…
Poor Drago, he doesn’t look like a monster… Well, ok he looks odd but he’s not scary like actual Komodo Dragons. He looks less threatening than the monster costume (how’d they manage to make one that good?) and he’d look like just another Hybrid kid if he shot the scene without it. Looks like Drago didn’t hear a thing, after going for the water and snacks…
Remember: Hybrids. Mostly human. The male Angler fish hybrids would likely NOT have any of that “special sexual dimorphism” … also note that not even all Angler fish do.
Of course, Drago and Viper have the heads of their respective nonhuman halves. There’s a lot about Hybrids that is still unknown
(possibly because Robin hasn’t decided everything about hybrids or it’s a huge spoiler for future chapters), so their traits may manifest like Drago for instance and have the head of another animal as part of their Hybridization. I hope you’re right about the Angler fish Hybrids, I should probably look up to see how many species lack the sexual dimorphism…
Second panel : the claws are brown , and green in the rest of the strip
Well, this is a very strange turn of events from the last two parts.
So, we have our first aquatic hybrid, and an anglerfish to boot. Neat!
She’s angling for an Emmy
Look out, this new character has started luring out the bad jokes…
Exactly what I was fishing for
I’m sure you’re just glowing with pride…
If they are Komodo Dragons, wouldn’t that mean they have a venomous bite? Real world Komodos do have venom like monster lizards and Gila monsters, though for awhile people thought that they had poisonous bacteria instead of the venom which they actually possess. So I hope Drago is careful of what he bites
Not an expert, but don’t think that Komodo dragons are poisonous. Since I doubt if these two eat rotten meat, their bite should be normal. Might have a higher tolerance for over aged meat I suppose, doubt they have ever tried.
It’s actually a fairly recent discovery, but komodos are venomous. It’s a venom, bacteria combo that makes their bite so deadly.
Right. Venomous. Was an Evil Inc where someone purchased a super ability, miss-worded it. Became poisonous. Not helpful.
Monitor lizards*
Given how he’s the one asking if he looks monstrous enough already without a costume it does seem unlikely he’s bothered by the idea he looks like a monster. Heck the anthros in general are probably still seen as monsters by many even the otherwise cute ones like his female friend that showed up.
Kai and Kaya’s hometown is proof of that. Most of them have probably slit each other’s throats since they left.
And that’s just in rural America! Yeesh! I’d hate to see more isolated communities reacting to their new Hybrid populations… They’d likely be deified or demonized.
