“Marco!” “Polo!”
I know it’s probably just an inside joke for the family, but some nagging part of my mind is going like “the twins know their dad’s given name, right?”
Oh absolutely. If my name was Marco I would DEFINITELY encourage my kids to do this.
Talking fast, going native
as two brothers meet.
Avoiding talk, relative
to the guy knocked off his feet.
Mum knows the routine
she’s done it all before
She gets the kids between
to keep her tongue off the floor.
The holiday now begins
for the Romero clan twins;
venturing back to the old land.
(How much of them can it withstand?)
Diolch yn fawr iawn.
I’m guessing Mr. Marco has heard all the jokes about his name and about the game of Marco Polo. It’s sweet to see how well Emilio and Marco get along, though not seeing each other for a year probably helps with that… As for Sabrina, she’s well aware of the costs of marrying someone from another, non English speaking country, talking too fast in his native language. Expect to also see a lot of moving hands. I wonder what’ll happen when Emilio tells Marco about the twins pouncing onto a random grump thinking it was him, Sabrina will probably have an “I told you so,” moment.
I really wish I could’ve become byfluent, but unfortunately for me I’m just not wired for it. My second language is math.
I used to think the same thing. But that was back before I learned about improvements in language learning software.
To be clear, there’s still a lot of room for improvement. None of the programs I’ve been using actually understand any human languages and voice recognition software still does not work for some people, such as myself. But unlike human instructors, they’re not offended or frustrated, so you can learn at your own pace.
To be clear, I’m not very far into learning any other language yet. I mean, I’m trying, but said software only makes it possible, not easy. For those of us for whom language learning is a struggle, it will probably always be a struggle. But I can spend an hour or two at it every day and make progress without someone putting up a wall, so I’m making progress, even if it’s slow.
There are a bunch of different options, so you can probably find one that suits you moderately well. I’m using one of the ones that game-ifies the process, which I feel helps immensely with keeping motivation up. I may not be making as much progress with the language as I’d like, but I’m getting a lot of points, so it feels like progress to the more impatient parts of my brain.
Non parlo bene italiano. Parlo mal italiano? Non sono sicuro. Parlo un po’ di italiano? Va bene. Enough of that. The point is I can do a bit, but not nearly enough to hold a conversation. But someday, maybe.
I’m having some trouble getting to your latest comic page on Top Web Comics. I don’t know if it has something to do with my browser settings or what. I’m just mentioning it in case anyone else is having the same problem
Could be a cache problem. I’d suggest clearing it and trying again.
I cleared both cache and cookies. Didn’t do any good, I’m afraid. I also tried opening the image in a new tab, but I only got a message saying “This content is no longer available.”
It was broken. I’ve fixed it 😀
Thank you so much!!!
Panel 5: Should the word balloons, one after another, be read left-to-right or top-to-bottom?
It doesn’t matter in this case, that’s why I put them like that. The idea is that it suggests that Marco is talking a lot about different things.
In that case, I’ll go left-to-right, since that’s the chronological order of those events.
If ever I hear somebody shout “Marco!” I’m gonna reply, “Pierre White!” just to annoy them.
Full speed Italian can get dangerous if you stand too close to those who are speaking.
The arms get very involved.
The kids are fluent because they learned it while young. They did not say whether or not the “other” city was in Italy, but seems likely. that or her home town.
But they spent enough time in Italy while toddlers to speak like a native.
They have done tests, babies CAN tell different syllables apart even if adults cannot. Involved syllables from an obscure Amerind tribe, with two distinct syllables that english speakers cannot hear any difference in. Dimly lit room, nothing interesting, baby sitting mom’s lap looking forward.
Speaker repeats syllable A again and again. Nothing happens. Baby gets bored.
Speaker says syllable B. About 2 seconds later, display with smoked glass front lights up, lots of minor noise and interesting activity. Little toys.
Baby learns this quickly, soon baby looks BEFORE the activity starts. Mom oblivious.
So you are born able to hear nearly any sound, lose this ability with time.
Full Speed Italian should be the name of either a band or a sandwich.
Why not both?
Or a TV sports show or website specializing in Italian motor sports.
Kai: “I’ve got the paint for your dialogue so your accent will match!”
Kaya: “And I have the Italian flags so you’ll be speaking Italian!”
Sabrina: “What…how many times have I told you not to break the fourth wall?”
Meanwhile at the baggage claim…
Katsumi (nauseous): “I think I got on the wrong plane…”
