Connections and knowledge are worth more than finance. And because Cleo is -sharing- her connections and knowledge with Marco, thus providing him access to them later, this is not an investment he will feel the need to pay her back for. Clever snake.
Yeah, Cleo does know what she’s doing :p
Please stop fondling it, Marco
and get the thing back on the Ice.
Otherwise it’ll start to age
and then it won’t be quite so nice.
Cleo knows her fresh fish, it seems,
and the best Pla(i)ce to get at them.
Establishing more connections
and expounding her stratagem.
A personal note I have to give
as I seem to have some slack;
I thought I’d give four lines to say
that we all want our Robin back!!!
Dittoing those last four lines: Come back Robin! ~
I’ll be back. Trying to pick up the pace of commenting again. There are a lot of them to go through xD
Oh, I’ll be back. Trying to pick up the pace again ^^
Cleo proving her worth and knowledge, helping Marco realize the potential of this partnership! A couple of hours really isn’t all that far either so long as you have a means of keeping items like that cold.
A couple of hours puts me in the next country (Belgium is pretty small) so a couple hours sounds like a lot to me, but I know in the US, it isn’t considered as far as here ^^
Unless you run into some really heavy traffic, a couple of hours drive is going to take you into the next county, or maybe the one after that, here in North America.
The provinces or states tend to be huge, with lots of counties in each one. In fact each Canadian province, except the smallest one, has more area than the entire country of Belgium. In the US, 42 of the 50 states are larger than Belgium on its own. It is a matter of perspective.
I live in north east Oklahoma, have for most of my life. I’ve a number of relatives the live in Northern Missouri on both mom & dad’s sides of the family. It was pretty common for us to go visit when I was younger, a drive that usually took around 6 or more hours depending on the usual bathroom breaks, stopping to eat or maybe shop along the way. This was mostly interstate and highway driving through largely rural areas, Kansas City being the largest city we would sometimes pass through though we usually took other routes to avoid the traffic there. A drive of a couple hours really isn’t all that much to me, I’m used to longer. I would estimate that if traffic in Hybrid City isn’t all that bad + usual highway speeds here in the US they are likely a bit over 100 miles away from home right now, maybe as much as 130 – 140. Much of that depending on how many smaller communities they had to pass through along the way.
Where I live (Indianapolis/Marion County), a couple of hours in light weekend traffic on the Interstate (our equivalent to Germany’s Autobahn or Britain’s multi-lane Motorways) *might* get you border-to-border to an adjacent county *if* you’re going EW *and* there’s no construction. (Currently there’s construction being done on the North Split which is slowing traffic quite a bit.)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indianapolis
From regular driving experience from Indianapolis to Ohio and Illinois you can just barely get into the next state in 2hrs if you’re lucky to catch a rare point of no construction slowing down traffic and able to run at or over the speed limit the entire time. But as you note there’s construction going on and the Interstate tends to always be under construction at some point. Holiday weekends you could literally see traffic backed up for 30+ miles.
Yeah, some places in the world, couple of hours drive will take you out of the country. Down Under, especially in Perth where Daniel the Human and I live, couple of hours driving barely even gets you “down the road”! Sure, there’s plenty of places within a couple hours driving time, but you wanna go to Albany on Western Australia’s south coast? I think that was about a 4 hour drive. Drive to Broom on the Northern West Coast? Hope you got somewhere to stay along the way. I mean scraplets, it’s a 4 hour flight to get from Perth to Sydney and a 5 hour flight back due to wind, even for me!
That Simpsons episode where Bart tricks an Aussie kid into riding hours to the next door neighbors place? It can be like that in some places, especially in cattle and farming country. But I’m pretty sure the Human parents around there don’t let their kids try and ride their bicycle THAT far, I think. I’m not sure on that bit, I’m still learning about Humans and all that…
The only way t could be fresher is if he caught it himself, I heard there are some establishments that have you purchase the right to catch and keep fish you catch but I think those are mostly rumors.
I’m pretty sure he’s holding a rainbow trout, you could catch them out on the river by where I grew up as a kid, Montana is funny like that sometimes.
Yup, that’s a rainbow trout ^^
They are often fished for around here as well.
Montana really is funny. I loved catching fish. It was like, the one thing I was good at.
Cleo is just full of surprises.
yes, she is xD
Describing “a couple of hours’ drive” as “really close to the city” is such an American thing to me. (Though I understand places like Australia and rural Canada are the same.) Apart from the islands, I can get anywhere in my country in under 2.5 hours of driving.
Heh. I am -probably- starting a trip tomorrow that will be 16+ hours -each way-, and all via the same interstate highway that runs within 5 miles of my house. And that’s only about halfway across the country, maybe a bit more. …This is going to be sooo boring.
I know your pain to an extent. I drive long haul trucks and an average work day for me is covering about 500 miles. Trust me, Sirius XM and audio books saved my sanity.
Well; due to a misunderstanding, I did not have to go after all. 🙂 I bought an audio-book, then could not find it for the next two trips! Finally found it in a bag on the floor in front of the (never used as a tv) tv. LOL
2.5 hours of driving puts me half way into the neighboring country xD
I’m always amazed at how expensive seafood is here, and I live in a coastal state (although not close to the coast). Seafood restaurants are not at all common either.
For the moment I’m assuming K&K are still asleep in their beds, or the car. Can’t have Kaya falling asleep every half hour through the day. 🙂 It will be interesting to see how this bit goes without them along to stir things up. Will we get to see Cleo get all wound up instead?
I like the first panel, with all the fog in the valley. Although my first thought was “Snow??”. 🙂 I like seeing foggy valleys, but have no interest in getting up early enough to see them. LOL (I do occasionally see them at night though. 🙂 )
Seafood generally is expensive, yeah. Meat is generally easy to cultivate :p
This has put a dark thought in my head. While I am sure there aren’t fish based hybrids there must be some who are based on livestock animals (e.g. sheep, cows). How would they react to seeing produce made of the remains of animals that they are not far removed from? (and I think I’m almost making myself a vegetarian with the thought).
Most of them probably deal with it well enough, after all they aren’t the animal, just because they share some features with that animal, don’t mean they’re much of anything like it.
For that matter, we already have hybrids based on lifestock animals in the story, dogs are lifestock in china.
Well remember how Cleo reacted to that medieval painting of a Saint killing snakes vs Kaya’s reaction to a knight slaying a dragon. It all hinges on personal perspective.
How do you react to people eating monkeys? 🙂

It’s a question that I don’t tend to explore in my comic, since I want to go more towards the happy feelings and not so much towards the dark ones. Still, feel free to discuss ^^
It’s amazing just how much personal effort Cleo is putting into this. I know Kaya is probably the best friend she ever had but this is above and beyond. She must really see this restaurant as a long term investment. Maybe even the foundation of her own portfolio.
And the fresh fish remains me of a fun side quest from Spirit Tracks. A guy in Castle Town wants at least 10 fish and you can buy fish from a monger in a seaside village. Only the fish spoil as you drive the train to deliver them and even if you take the most direct route you wouldn’t get enough there. So I figured out using a near by spirit gate will take you through a detour in the snow realm. There you connect to another spirit gate that opens much closer to Castle Town. And while traveling through the Snow Realm the fish won’t spoil. After the first delivery he rewards you with a random treasure you can either sell for twice what you spent to get the fish or hang on to it and use it in trade to get other train parts.
I’ve seen how overbearing a wealthy parent can be about having their child at least get their feet wet in the entrepreneurial waters. Not all such parents are like that, but to me it feels like Cleo’s story checks out.
Yup, Cleo is going above and beyond. ^^
Interesting solution to that game mechanic. Would have taken me some time to figure out xD
Jesse’s Adventure, panel 2: There should be a comma at the end of “heck”.
Works either way. Changes the way the sentence reads, but does not change the meaning.
I agree. In this case, I deliberately left it out to give the feeling of fast talking.
And so the ingredient shopping has begun.
Just how much knowledge and pull does Cleo possess? She seems to have a large grasp of experience that she hasn’t let on before. That, or I just haven’t paid enough attention. But, still!!!
I’m not sure Cleo has the ‘experience’, but she does have a lot of knowledge, and -access- to someone with a lot -more- knowledge -and- experience. 🙂
Marco: So Cleo, how did you know about this place?
Cleo: I asked Dad’s personal chef where he gets the ingredients he uses and he told me about a bunch of good places. Over there, you can get a Styrofoam cooler and some ice so that fish can stay fresh as we go to the next place on my list
Different parents are different, so it’s tough to say for certain. I’ve known some wealthy parents who thought raising their children right just meant getting them to start their own businesses, which basically meant their kids needed to know how to tell people what to do. But Cleo’s parents don’t seem quite like that.
At the other extreme, I knew a guy whose parents made him spend at least week doing each of the tasks that the company his parents owned did itself. That more or less took him from 5 years old to about 15.
To be clear, just because he was “doing” the task didn’t mean the company was directly benefiting from his labor. For example, when he was working in their accounting department, he was working on a duplicated set of books, which had to match the official set at the end of the week in order to pass. But other times, it did. Like when he was working in purchasing, they had someone watching what he typed and listening to the phone calls he made to make sure he got the orders right, but he made the actual purchases. (“You sound young.” “I’m nor *that* young, I’ve been working here for almost 10 years.”)
Ah, the sweet sound of context-free boasting.
She has the means to figure things out, so she has a lot of knowledge when needed ^^
If that fish was any fresher, it would kiss you.
As long as these fishes aren’t from Ordralfabetix ^_^”
Daniel here. Don’t know if you have heard about it, but there is a new show coming to Netflix – “Sweet Tooth”. It’s about Human Hybrid children too, only theirs are in a post-apocalyptic world, yours are just in the modern world. Figured I’d mention it anyway…
https://www.indiewire.com/2021/06/sweet-tooth-review-netflix-hybrid-babies-1234642380/
Yeah, I’ve heard of it, and I plan to have a look soon. Funny how two creatures can come up with a similar setting and don’t even know about the other xD
Somewhere, we might be seeing a dolphin or orca hybrid…
