Just because someone’s species or race is named in something does not mean they know about it. I found that out when partying with some millennial falcons…
Did they at least know how to throw a falcon punch?
So it’s Catacombs and Drakes
played by Dragons and Doggies…
perhaps with some snakes?
At least one would be at her ease.
Battling dice rather than dire Wolves,
letting the aches and pains fade.
Firing up the brains’ grey valves,
letting the game be well played.
The Zebra girl’s there once more,
full focus at the front of the frame.
She could be a good friend for sure
and they may need a fifth for the game.
Nice one ^^
The game will work with four players though :p
*waves to Zuri and Alexis*
Kai is excused : living in a retarded town until recently , he’s never heard about RPGs
Well, he heard of RPG’s, but mainly the digital kind :p
I do enjoy a good game of d&d once and while
I want give it a decent try but I don’t have a group to try it with. I looked at YouTube vids of groups before and I have a good idea of how the game goes, but I never had a decent run with it. That said, Catacombs and Drakes will only loosely resemble D&D for this very reason. It’s more about the roleplaying and story aspect.
Same problem here, Robin! Only tried D&D a couple of times, but never had a decent group. First one, we were -all- completely inexperienced. Second one, I ‘suspect’ the DM was deliberately picking on me because I was noticeably the oldest in the group (older than him!), and still inexperienced.. 😉 Other than that, the closest I’ve done was a little online shared storyline roleplaying. I rather enjoyed my characters there. 🙂 🙂 🙂
When i played first time D&D, i got lucky, because we was already familiar with a similar game (M.A.G.U.S. – or the Chronicles of Adventurers – I don’t think you ever heard about it, because its a hungarian game, with a bit simpler and more “rubbery” rule set, more fitting to introduce someone to the book based RPG-s, but because its simpler, after a point became a bit problematic to find a decent Game Master (in D&D Dungeon Master), who can make the adventures interesting enough, without adding invincible god-like creatures. My big brother had a knack for scare the whole party, all members stronger than level 10, only with a kitten and a closed box. Especially if we was wandering in a desert…
I’ve recently started playing myself, I’ll be honest I originally thought it would be a waste of money but (none of us having played before) but I’ll admit it’s pretty fun if you get a good group.
Though at the time of this post “Reilei” is currently bleeding out alone in the woods after an encounter with a giant spider went wrong. (I was at 1 health with no chance of rescue, if it rolled a 12 or lower I lived, 13 or higher I died.)
….the die bounces… Slides… And finally… It crit failed!
Worth the whole campaign for that moment
DM: D100 spider streaming down from the mountain!
Player: Which is how much, exactly?
DM *Roll*: One.
I’m in a session right now. I’ve got the workings of a BA half-ork Battlemaster. I’m only Lvl 4 right now, but I’m quickly setting myself to be the strongest front-liner. You’ll find that the game is highly dependant on the DM. D&D is very loose and uses lots of the DM’s judgements for rulings and such.
I am planning on running an online campaign using Fantasy Grounds, if anyone is interested. You need to download the demo software, which is free, and you can get it on Steam or straight from fantasy grounds. Time may not be good for Europe, though, since I’m in US Central time zone.
Hah. I love the adaptation of Dungeons and Dragons. Not big into the game myself, considering you would sometimes have to kill dragons, but I still appreciate the pun. The comic is coming along great. I’m sure chapter six will be just as amazing as the first five. This comic is a true gift to the world of online literature. Stay awesome Robin. Also, out of curiosity, any estimate for when you’ll be drawing that potions panel? I’m sure you’re busy and it will take a while to finish, no rush needed. Just wondering. Either way have an awesome week! Can’t wait for the next page!
Thanks Alpha. About the potion comic, I haven’t had the time yet. I still plan on making it soon though.
Alright, Nice. Keep up the good work!
Whenever my characters faced dragons, they would not fight unless the dragon was proven to be bad (that is, killing for any reason besides self defense). It was always at least a bit of a challenge for the DM to get me to fight. If the DM had ever failed, I may have had my character try to talk down one or both parties from fighting.
Hmm….. aren’t the hybrids supposed to be a rare minority? Kai and Kaya were the only ones in the entire town before they moved, yet the majority of this school’s population seems to be hybrids like they all moved to that school or something.
Maybe it’s a local anomaly? You know, so many hybrids are going there so the parents of hybrids are more likely to send their kids there?
It’s a school that accepts a lot of hybrids, so their parents with hybrids naturally want to send them there so that they are more likely to be accepted.
On another page, Robin, I hope you can continue drawing this for years to come.
The ratio is one to five for hybrids to humans. https://www.twindragonscomic.com/comic/city-school/
The room’s more 50/50 if you take into account that every far background character is a human kid.
There is six anthros for nine humans in the room . So , 2/5 for 3/5
They currently live in a city that is known to be hybrid friendly, so it’s normal for more hybrids to be there. The school has a ratio of one in five students being a hybrid. There happens to be a bit more hybrids than the ratio in the room now, but that’s not such a strange thing to happen. The town where the twins came from was a small town so less changes of hybrids there.
:O Chapter links were updated 😀
Yeah, I spent some time updating them last night ^^
Roll vs. Facepalm.
I rolled a 1. Low numbers are good, right? 🙂 I win a prize, right? 😀
Proceed to insert palm through face. Take 10 points of blugeoning damage, and 5 points of psycic damage. You are now prone and blinded. You must use 1/2 of your speed to stand up, and must make a saving throw on both constitution, and wisdom to remove your hand and restore your sight.
At Level 1 (or perhaps Level 0), I’m pretty sure I’m dead after sustaining that kind of damage. 😉 The local stable will be hurting now that their resident manure shoveler is no longer around to do the mucking. 😀
Oh crap you were only Lvl 1?
Benji did say the school had a 1:5 hybrid:human ratio. That panel is 3:4, considering it’s only a part of the cafeteria, mostly empty, and a good chunk is blocked by our reacuring monochromatic maiden I’d say it’s well within the margin of error.
Sorry meant to reply toTtendoTwo
Shouldn’t that be di-chromatic? (This is meant as a serious “I’d like to know for sure” question, not just a smart remark!)
In this case, I think dichromatic would be the better term, though monochromatic would not be wrong assuming the two colors are shades of each other.
Dichromatic is specific to animals that display exactly two distinct colors, such as skunks, zebras and tuxedo tomcats. (Its use is not restricted to animals, but that’s the typical context.)
Monochromatic is more about an object or creature with a single color in two or more hues (including white as a fully-lightened hue.) Siamese cats are a good example of an animal with monochromatic fur that is not dichromatic since a Siamese cat’s fur usually has multiple shades of the same color.
When I was typing it up king Julian from Madagascar kept popping in my head. Plus I got some alliteration out of it , “B” alliteration would pose a problem considering the context I was going for.
Good to know by anyway
Right with ya cliff. Alliteration is always a good reason to break the rules. 😀 I figured Ed’s serious question warranted a serious answer.
And I thank you both, for answering -and- taking the question seriously. 🙂
I hope Kaya joins them, her playing would be hilarious.
Will be interesting to see how this chapter goes, will it be deep immersion?
It will play out like they were in the game itself. The focus will be more on their adventure and less on the actual game (dicerolls and stuff).
Considering his old town was populated by the type of “Christians” who threw holy water at him regularly I doubt they had a games store.
They didn’t have a game store. They did have internet so they know about stuff. Kai just never heard about that game.
I want to know what kind of sandwiches they’re eating (I’m guessing Kai’s is a cheese sandwich, obviously can’t tell Benji’s).
Also that’s the weirdest ampersand (& symbol, which as you can see here looks nothing like what’s in the comic) I’ve ever seen. What font does the comic use?
Sandwiches are generally with cheese , ham or both ^_^
There is a character with the same function as an ampersand but a different look; rather like a backwards “3” with a vertical line through it. I don’t know what it’s name is, but this looks like a stylized version of that character.
It’s also an ampersand, but from an older typography per Don’s explanation below: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ampersand
The font I’m using is ‘digital comic’. It’s a great font for the comic, but I never anticipated that I needed to use an ampersant and when I tried it, it came out like this one. Changing fonts just for the ampersant looked weird, so I left it at this. It’s only for the mention of the game and I think everyone gets it anyway.
My pedant is going to come out. I apologize in advance. Typography is one of my “things”. The ampersand derives from the Latin word for and: Et. If you write “Et” in cursive with a capital “E” and a lower-case “t”, it will look an awful lot like the ampersand in the comic. Our modern ampersand was the result of typographers slowly morphing the cursive two letters into a single symbol.
(runs to do a Bing search)
I found a decent article on the history and morphology of the ampersand here: https://medium.com/black-lion-banner/the-history-of-the-ampersand-c81839171940
🙂
Interesting reading.
I second that!
Meh. Real dragons play Call of Cthulhu.
*makes SAN check*
You gotta start somewhere though :p
I still really like the zebra girl’s facial markings. They look sooo much like a halter! 🙂
Robin… I’d appreciate it if you added names & species for guest characters appearing in a strip. I can’t remember them all! Thanks! Ed
Greetings Iron Ed,
In the Archive, I encourage you to revisit the comics entitled “Rolling” and “Extra: at the snackhouse”. Perhaps those might help a little. 🙂
However…… I sense a great disturbance in The Force…… I highly suspect there might be at least one more cameo in that first panel……
Yes; I remember Zuri at the snackhouse, and I -think- I remember seeing Alexis sitting along a wall early in the gym arc. That dog at the far left looks familiar too! 🙂
The zebra is Zuri and the mouse is alexis Cheynas ^_^
I really should do that, but I always forget :p
Her markings are pretty fun but I like her hair most. It’s fun to draw 😀
Yeah! I liked doing manes and tails when I was drawing ponies for the niece. 🙂
man only if i could draw like that 😐 =)
With enough time and practice, it’s possible 😀
True that!
Everyone has this ‘muscle’ — it’s just a question of whether you’re willing to ‘exercise’ it with enough practice to ‘strengthen’ it. With enough repetition, it’ll become easier to use it…
…unless you’d rather spend your time pursuing other interests, & just let it ‘atrophy’ — the choice is yours.
AND there is no such thing as being too old for it! I didn’t start drawing until my late 50s. Too lazy to actually get -good-; but,
I’m not terrible either. 😉
I discovered your comic recently and really enjoyed it.
I look forward to reading more.
Thanks for sharing your story.
So, “Dungeons & Dragons” becomes “Catacombs & Drakes”…?
Hmm…
I might’ve tried to stick with the alliteration, & called it “Catacombs & Cockatrices”, but that’s just me…
Catacombs & Catalans?
Ruins & Reptilids?
Temples & Titans?
“Catalans”?
The only time I’ve ever heard of that creature was in 1 of the 4 “Security_Dungeon”-levels beneath the Barbarian Village in [RuneScape]…
…do you play in that MMORPG…?
Catalan Drake, a subtype of European dragon. RuneScape probably got the name from there.
P.S. I only played for a day in middle School, never got off the tutorial island (for some reason the game wouldn’t recognize that I was casting the spell on the chicken)
If ya see this sorry it took a month to reply, took that long before I decided to reread from the start
Let’s hope this comic doesn’t get C$D from Wizards of the Coast.
*C&D
I felt the dollar sign was appropriate. 😉
“And you call yourself a dragon?” …TBH, that would be my response as well. XD
This will be fun. Let’s see how Kai fairs in the trials of C&D.
