Ulterior motive
Rex is a practical guy. Heavy damage gets the job done, so that’s what he goes for.
So I got through all 260 poll results. You guys voted so much, thank you ^^
I got a loooot of useful information out of that, mostly on what you guys think of the comic so far and what you would want to see. I can already say that most of what you had to say will be covered sooner or later in the comic. Here are my thoughts on the specific topics that came up:
- Background stories of the main characters
- I got chapters planned on all the characters. This includes the twins, Benji, Cleo and Rex. The first one of these that gets his own chapter, aside from Kai and Kaya of course, is Benji. So rejoice, Benji fans 😀
- Zuri got asked about a couple times. I’m sad to say, she’s not one of my own characters, she is a cameo payed for through patreon. As such, there are no plans to make her into a full character.
- Regular humans
- Oh boy, did I see this one coming up quite a lot :p Many of you want to see more interactions between hybrids and humans, and I agree on this!
- The reason why there haven’t been any humans in the cast yet, is because I had way too much fun with the creation of the hybrids AND because I didn’t feel confident enough in my ability to draw human faces. In the future, there will be more humans though. Hybrids are the minority after all, so it only makes sense.
- Worldbuilding
- I’m in the midst of making some plans for this. Obviously I can’t start pouring exposition about the world all over you in the comic, and it hasn’t come up much in the comic itself either, so I’ll be doing this in a different way in the near future. One thing that I’m thinking about is making side stories or sketches about the world, how the hybrids get treated, about what’s different in their life,… everything that I (and you guys) can think of.
- I’ll also be making sure to get your input on this. I will be making polls to see what you guys want me to work on first.
- The origin of the hybrids
- The long standing mystery. How did hybrids come into existence? What happened? Was it aliens? All questions WILL be answered in one of the next chapters people. It will be the origin chapter! There will be surprises! Up to now, I’ve heard many theories by fans, but no one has pinpointed it as of yet. This will be fun ^^
- There were some questions about possible crushes, ships and teenage love life. Can’t say much about that yet, but one thing is certain. I hate stories where there is a love relationship just waiting to happen, and it NEVER happens. (an anime specialty :p ) Don’t expect that here if I ever come to anything like that.
- Finally there were people that wanted to see various things, like how the restaurant is doing, more about the parents, other family of the twins, more pranks,… Rest assured, most of what has been said will appear in one form or another. I just don’t know when yet.
That’s it for the results. I covered the most important points for now. I might talk about some other points later if it comes up. Really really thank you for voting and telling me your honest opinion, it really helps me out and makes me want to work on the comic even more.
One quick thing I want to say. While I will take all these suggestions to heart in one way or another, they will in no way influence the general flow of the story. I read of some people worrying I would do whatever people would suggest, but that has never been my intention. I do this to look into what you think of the comic and what was liked. I’m well aware that if I take these literal and write the story, it would lose the personal feeling I put into it. Still, knowing what is liked and disliked allows me to work on these points to make them better. So rest assured that I will keep a strong hold on the story ^^

He wasn’t sure what class until Benji talked about Kai. Is this him saying it’s ok, he likes that quality in him. A quality they have in common?

This works out nicely. They’ve got utility (Rogue), burst damage (Mage), and healing + tanking (Paladin (Paladog?)). Now Cleo can be anything without hurting the party dynamic.
Tangentially related: Glad Benji is getting his own arc soon. I feel like we know the least about him despite being the 3rd of the 5 “main” characters introduced (so far).
Totally understand about Zuri. Perhaps Nate could be shown more (or at all) instead. 😉

The 3 main key character of RPG’s often described as a “The sword, the staff, and the key” – aka the fighter (this can be the Paladin, but he is mostly the not-mentioned “The Shield”), the mage, and the rogue (open doors, disarm traps, and occasionally play it’s charm to talk out the party of the trouble). The paladin is only a half-match for the damage dealer “class” (except against undeads and demons), so the missing is some heavy damage dealer without magic. But no one said, the team setup most be a perfect one.
What’s really fun is when the healer lands the killing blow, as happened with my group on some large monsters twice. And since the nature of her attack was saying something to do damage, we said she “scolded it to death.”

Benji is deserving of his own story arc. I got two chapters that are dedicated to him. I also got at least one chapter for both Cleo and Rex in the making.
It’s a shame Zuri isn’t mine, otherwise I could bring her up a little more. Nate will be a good fill for that gap xD

Yup, I had that in mind already, but for way later in the story. I’m going to keep in mind to add some human-hybrid interaction throughout the story from now on though.

I’m really liking the reasons behind choosing the classes. Many D&D classes have preconceptions about the type of people who play them, which Benji shows that he has. Although maybe it just shows that Benji does not know all the aspects of his friends yet.
So far I’m really enjoying this Arc.
I guess it comes with the experience that Benji has on the topic. He knows the game and has played it before, so he met people that pick certain characters.
Preconceptions are nurtured as we go on in life, so it’s no different for Benji’s idea of what classes people pick. Playing with total newbies at the game will certainly broaden his horizon ^^

I love where all of this is going. It’s good to get some insight into what your plans for the future are, Robin. It will be a unique and wonderful experience to watch them unfold. I am proud of you for once again exhibiting the knowledge of how to balance your control of the comic and ours. You seem to know quite well how to keep things going as planned without leaving us feeling completely excluded from the comic. This comic truly resonates with the hearts of the audience and the author both it would seem. Keep up the good work. I can’t wait for next Monday.

This is looking like one of your best arcs to me, Robin! I think we will see a lot into the psychology of the players, especially Benji and Rex.
Panel three is my favorite overall; both the text and art. (I especially like Rex’s ears in this one.) I’m really liking Rex all through this one; especially the last panels.

Unwavering, pure will, indeed, but no one said, that cannot be pure dark! (Also myself once came up a warlock, who fighted against stereotypes and dressed pure white. Also he was our party main healer, transporting our enemies health to our injured allies. The whole party had mixed up feelings about him… 😀 )

he chose paladin…..one of the most notorious classes in Ye Olde Dee und Dee to play because of the rigid moral/behavior codes, which most GM’s had the player break ( and thus love his palandin status……).
I’ve seen actual fights happen over this.

Funny enough in my game it’s the paladin that causes others to break their own moral codes.
Example: my character is a far traveler from a land where everything is poisonous in some way, his people believe that the only thing that can use poison as a weapon is the thing that made it, though making medicine from them is acceptable. Naturally he had some samples with him if he needed to mix up something but our paladin convinced him (with a persuasion roll btw) to poison the water supply of a castle filled with goblins.
…over 30 deaths at his hand… Breaking a central law of his people in the process.
He put himself under a self imposed exile afterward.

I go goliath monk, because there is ALWAYS a player as a small race, and they are NEVER able to turn down being fastball-special’ed. ESPECIALLY if they are the rogue.
In the game “Werewolf: the Apocalypse,” I tried to play a character not limited by tribal or auspice stereotypes. So I went with the Children of Gaia (peacemakers, healers) tribe with the ahroun (full moon, warrior) auspice. It gave me more room to develop the character. Of course, the running joke, especially around the more martial Garou, was…”Love thy neighbor or I’ll #$@#ing kill you!!!”
I’m really liking this relaxed Rex. Makes him more relatable.
