Is she a kitsune =D If she is i had this odd feeling there would be one popping up or at least had hopes XP
Jin is male Kian
Sorry i just noticed my typo
But will Kaya believe he is a he?
Looks like either a shiisa or a foo dog to me.
I say Shisa, as well. It has the curled ‘mane’ and tail.
Not a kitsune. Good guess, though đ
What is he then?
he is a komainu. they live at chinese and japanese temples. they are statues. they really are beautiful in person.
thats right! he’s a lion-dog!
he is one of those stone dogs in temples right, the ones that represent inhaling and exhaling
They represent breathing? I thought the open mouthed statue scared away evil spirits an the closed mouthed one kept good spirits from leaving. Could be both though
Shisa.
http://www.okinawaindex.com/index/?tid=2&cid=290&id=1
Now, what would the name of that species be :p
foo dog
And we say âHaiâ to a newcomer
of a species not seen before;
a sweet and innocent, trouble
that was safe behind that big door.
Kaya soon drops off her false face
and, little one, she will be kind.
Even if she doesnât translate,
she is the kindest one youâll find.
So the squad advances again;
their number may grow to five.
Kai may want to include Jin
but itâs Kaya provides the drive…
Jin’s a boy.
Yeah, dude looks like a lady.
Was’t sure, good sir. I tried to avoid assigning Jin a gender. I do refer to Kaya as ‘she’ though.
And I do appreciate you keeping me on my toes.
Read the author’s note.
“Now, who recognizes his species”
There’s a bit of a telling word in there about the gender, if you didn’t skip it.
Just a word of warning. Your last sentence could be seen as a bit aggressive towards Welsh Rat. Please make sure to be friendly to each other ^^
All my ‘she’s are referring to Kaya.
Probably should have read the bit under the strip though(!)
Looks like a girl. Kitsune?
But he’s a boy :p
Not a kitsune, though. Good guess ^^
if i had to guess would it be a Komainu?
And we have a winner đ
Same energy:

hahaha xD
Just a little less jumpy xD
Wikipedia: Chinese or Imperial guardian lions are a traditional Chinese architectural ornament. Typically made of stone, they are also known as stone lions or shishi. They are known in colloquial English as lion dogs or foo dogs.
Aka Komainu(Japanese term)
At least that is my guess.
Komainu variant since he speaks Japanese also constantly open mouth… So based on the statues this kid should be male.
To repeat a comment the artist made during the Tiny Toons pilot episode, “That thing will give you diabetes”.
Adorable. Hope the twins can help her harden up some.
To quote Yakko Warner, “Goodnight, everybody!”
Better that quote than the other one, you know, the one with the nurse…
Haha, Jin sure scores high on the cuteness chart xD
He’s also a boy :p
Now that his gender and species has been verified, there is the question about any special abilities. The twin’s special power is easily explained with basic science, even if how they got that ability is not.
But turning to stone?
Could be that he wants them to be kind because “you won’t like me when I’m mad”.
Haha, hopefully Kaya doesn’t open with a pounce this time. I like that Jin has oversized sandals so his claws don’t tear up the floor.
Did the flowers disappear from Marco’s shirt?
damn skippy she´ll pounce – to snuggle the cutie! i would too đ
The flowers are back! It’s a spring miracle!
Maybe Kaya will restrain herself?
Naaaaah! xD
I think Kaya may have some competition when it comes to being the most adorable character.
You’re not the only one saying that xD
Partial hybridization? Well still, cute kid! Kaya please go easy on the hugging! One neat twist is that I, and probably many others, was expecting Jin to be around Kai & Kaya’s age but he/she (hard to tell) is obviously a few years younger. Jin looks to be about 10 at most just by looking at him. I wonder how excited Jin will be to find out they’re dragons, assuming Reiniger hasn’t already told him.
Kaya, going easy on the hugging? We’ll see if that works out, but I have my doubts xD
And thanks ^^ Changing up the age of the characters does provide for some freshness đ
I know next to nothing about mythology outside of the Mediterranean region (Greek, Roman, some Egyptian), so I won’t even try to guess.
A thought came up while I was trying to look up an answer: can a Hybrid be an extinct species? A Thylacine fur pattern might be fun to see!
A hybrid can’t be an extinct species. So sorry, no dinosaurs ^^’
So “Dragon’s World” is real after all?!? Woo-HOOOOOooooooo!! đ đ đ
… maybe real in context of THEIR universe, not necessarily ours.
This makes mythical hybrids more interesting in that the creatures they are a hybrid of are more likely to exist currently.
Technically, there are dinosaur Hybrids, as birds are the only surviving members of the dromeosaurids, like raptors, tyranosaurs, carnosaurs, etc. And you can kinda include the Romero Twins, given that dinosaurs are believed to be a major inspiration for the myths of Dragons.
Plus: now Kaya IS a bearded dragon.
A very cute kid. And I’m very supprised to see a partial(?) hybrid who has only part fur.
My first idea was kitsune (spirit fox), but then I saw that curly hair and tail and realized that he is probably one of those lion dogs.
May guess is that he was working on (or playing with) a model temple.
Since nobody wrote it yet:
The shirt reads ‘GAO~’ which is the ‘roar’ sound effect.
You were the first to notice the gao- on the shirt ^^
I had been playing around with the partial hybridization for his design. It really came together đ
Ooh! Konichiwa, Jin-san! Shusshin wa doko desu ka? Would be cool to see some Japanese characters being used in the comic. đ Can’t wait to learn more about the new mythical!
Too many other languages getting involved! I donât really have a problem with it, but two in the same chapter just seems like it may be getting excessive especially if people who know the language tend to use it for a comment as a joke. Yours really wasnât too much, Iâm just worried about more people giving a whole speech then needing to be translated later in the week like what happened a little while back in the chapter happening too often
Italy, Germany, and now Japan. The whole axis is here! RUN!
@Gluten-Free Piledriver 0.0
My 5 years of Japanese in evening classes paid off xD
I hope it isnât too late. I was just wondering how many and what languages you speak. To be clear when I say speak I mean if you really tried you could at least mostly get through every day life, or at least what was and hopefully soon will once again be every day life. Sorry if this is too late or too personal. It just occurred to my, and Iâm just a bit curious.
So anyone notice that the flowers are no longer on his shirt
I did. Robin will probably fix it as soon as he reads the comments
Iâve been late two weeks in a row but now Iâm on time! Iâm going to ask one of my previous questions but make it a two part for something I think may be relevant for this. Is it possible for there to be hybrids for things like spirits and demons, or is it just mythical beasts? Also could things that are part human in mythology be considered a mythical beast and therefore be able to have hybrids of those species? Thatâs personally my theory for this case of partial hybridization, but if partial hybridization like that is just a thing that happens how often and if often how come we havenât seen more of it? Sorry for lots of questions Iâm just trying to make up for me being late for two weeks and managing to completely forget some others.
Not normally, but Mythicals are special. half human half beast creatures like centaurs are also not something that would happen. Keep in mind that the general rule is that human anatomy can not be changed much for a hybrid. They’re mostly still human.
We haven’t seen partial hybridization yet because it’s not the most common hybridization. I have drawn at least one that I can think of right now in the background before.
I’m not so sure it would be outside the realm of possibility. There’s differential expression in the hox (homeobox) genes to consider…and those expressions can determine, among other things, the number of limbs, and the presence and length of a tail. Biologically speaking, it’s possible, especially when there are modified salivary glands that produce hypergolic liquids (fwoosh).
But you’re probably right about the half-human half-quadraped thing, that would require a far more complex gene expression system. The twins having wings would be more likely and less complicated (even though that hasn’t happened).
Oddly enough, one of the proteins involved in hox expression is called Sonic Hedgehog…and yes, named after the video game character (the molecular biologist studying the protein saw his kid playing the game and just picked the name for the protein).
Those dog statues are all so oogly… so he’s throwing me off here being cute. No mistaking that tail, hair and ears though.
Wait when could Reiniger have told Jin about them? Also I love the contrast between Kayaâs cute eyes she used earlier in the chapter and those kinda creepy exited eyes
Whoops replied instead of posting separately by accident
Didn’t Doc tell the kid something before he ran out of the room? And Doc was shouting on the phone about “DRAGONS.”
No. He was shown to be with someone else in a room that looks pretty different, but I guess this room could have been along the way and he could have decided to quickly mention it, but I assumed he wouldnât have taken any breaks so as not to risk missing the twins as they left. Sorry if that sounded a bit rude
gotta make up for all the oogly-ness of the statues, I guess :p
Definately looks very much like a Komainu. We shall see.
Voting incentive, paragraph 1: The second comma should be at the end of “and”, not “head”.
Paragraph 3: “16 year old” should be hyphenated.
Paragraph 8: There should be a comma at the end of “uproar”.
Thanks ^^
I don’t intend to go back and change these info teasers, though. They’re not meant to be released or anything, but thanks for the tips anyway đ
lol, their shirt says “Gao!”, a sound for roar. Cute! Definitely looks like a shishi/komainu!
It sounded like a fitting shirt for him ^^
Kayaâs expression in panel four kills me. You can already see her preparing to pounce if she sees cuteness on the other side of the door. Unfortunately for Jin, Iâm pretty sure he meets Kayaâs cute threshold. (Why did that just put an image in my head of Kaya having thermal-imager vision, but for cute things instead of heat?) Itâs interesting how his language transitions periodically. Is it just a means of stylization, or is he still learning to speak English and using his native language as a fall-back? Iâm genuinely curious. Either way Robin managed to put an impressive amount of depth into Jin already despite only having appeared for a few panels so far. It will be interesting to learn more about him, and hear some of his history. Keep up the good work Robin! As always, stay awesome!
Kaya’s ‘curiosity killed the cat’ look xD
the cute-o-vision idea is hilarious xD
Jin is pretty good at english, actually. It’s just that he also still has his japanese heritage and some polite sentences don’t translate well to english at all. Greetings in Japanese are very formulaic ^^
and thanks for the kind words, Alpha ^^
Hey, at this rate maybe Kaiâs Bubble Potion wonât be the only voting incentive Iâm able to provide some of the inspiration behind. xD If not, who cares? Still a fun thought to picture. Glad you found it equally as amusing as I did when it first sprung to mind.
OMG he’s adorable!
That thar is *weaponized* cute!
Thanks đ
I’m curious-is Jaxel a real name?? Sorry it’s not related.
No idea, you’d have to look that up. It ‘can’ be a name though đ
Wow lots more paintings in the background. I guess it must just be because theyâre comforting for some people at the hospital.
Forget uncertainty of species; if I didn’t already know several males (and zero females) named Jin, I’d be asking about GENDER. Though I feel like that’s got more to do with Jin’s age than (mythical) species. My money’s on kitsune hybrid, but mostly because of the extra fur swirl at the base of the tail; if not, I’m curious as to what mythical property gets him classified as a mythical.
I wonder what is the ability HE used to convince the doctors he’s mythical. I mean, I don’t expect it will be the curly tail.
And another question: Where is the page with explanation why they classify certain hybrids as mythical? I don’t see it when I click “back”.
https://www.twindragonscomic.com/comic/finallyadragon/
Robin skipped the second explanation to Marcus because he didn’t want to repeat known information.
Sounds like it’s the “part human, part animal” that makes him/her a mythical.
Part-human, part-animal makes the child a hybrid. part-human, part-fantasy-animal makes the child a mythical hybrid.
They’re an Ĺkami which is the Japanese word for wolf and is linked to the wolf goddess Amaterasu who is also called Ĺkami and Amaterasu is often described as a spirit wolf hence Jin is a spirit wolf/Ĺkami.
I’m going to take a guess that Jin is a Kitsune. I’m usually pretty strict about them having 9 tails, but younger ones are an exception to this.
The swirls in her tail makes me think of Okami, though I know that’s hardly the first or only use ever of that design in asian art and mythology.
Though what I find curious is how her appearance is sorta half-hybrid and half-human. Majority of her body appears to not be covered in fur, and she has a human shaped head save for the ears and hair. Interesting, she’s almost like a hybrid-hybrid.
I do suspect a hybrid hybrid would be possible because there are many half human half animal creatures in mythology. But if I recall correctly I do remember seeing a character in the background who looked similarly partially hybrid. And Robin has stated that the twins are near the maximum, which means that there could actually be several âpartial hybridsâ and we havenât seen many because people will tend to prefer a seemingly half and half thing
Jin’s a boy.
So cute!
No idea what that species is though. I find it funny that we have both Japanese and German honorifics in a single strip. Donât know why.
PLEASE tell me he ends up addressing Kaya as Oneesan. đ
I see a litter box, that must mean she’s some kind of feline mythical. She also seems to be speaking in Japanese, so I’m guessing she’s some sort of Japanese mythical cat. She seems to only have one tail, so she’s not a Nekomata (they have 2 tails). There’s actually a few different cat yokai, which I’m guessing she’s supposed to be one of. Maybe a bakeneko or some other cat yokai with a single tail.
You can read up on Yokai, Japanese supernatural creatures, at http://yokai.com/
Box of LEGO/parts
I think you might be right, the color in the box looks like sand, hence my thought that it was a litterbox. She still seems to be a feline to me though
It’s a he
What makes you say that?
Names aren’t always an indicator of gender, some names are unisex and we now have female names used for boys and male names for girls
You literally said “She only has one tail” and “She also seems to be speaking in Japanese”. I don’t want to be rude, just pointing out a mistake.
I misunderstood your reply when i wrote this.
the Hover text says Jin’s a he as well as the description.
Yeah, just noticed that myself, Jin has a bit of femanine build (to me anyway)
I believe that’s because he is a very -young- boy; noticeably younger than Kai & Kaya. I’m guessing in the 10 years old range. đ
I believe that’s a box of Lego
In panel 1, ze good doktor clearly has eyes in the back of his head. Or more likely, kids of his own.
Wow that kid has more free time than me to make that 4th panel the Japan temple in the background or is that a model set cause of the spare walls/poles what just noticing the box full of parts probably LEGO
I see a lot of folk guessing foo dog, but that doesn’t seem to fit. My first thought was kirin or kitsune, but the features don’t seem right; no horn for the former and the eyes and ears would have a sharper look for the latter. My money is on an inugami.
Are they a Koma Inu or Shishi?
SHES ADORABLE
Jin’s a boy.
Seems a lot of commentators don’t read the hover-text. đ
Though admittedly I was confused if Jin was a boy or girl before reading it as well.
Same. Though I’m on Android, so I can’t read hover text; I can read the author’s note below the comic.
I, too, was confused about his gender until I read the author’s note.
A pretty fair number of commeters don’t seem to read any comments but their own either. đ
P.S. This was not pointed at you guys, or anyone else in particular! đ
I wonder how the doctors learned that Jin is a mythical hybrid. He doesn’t look that different from a dog hybrid. (see Benji’s picture as a poodle https://www.twindragonscomic.com/comic/poodle/)
On the topic of ‘partial’ hybrids some people are on about, check page 1, you have a baby with tiger stripe patterns on skin with cat ears and tail. Every hybrid is partial, it’s just the degree the two are mixed (for instance Cleo has very subtle hybrid features compared to the twins, benji, and rex)
That wasn’t meant to sound rude btw I just can’t seem to figure out how to say it without sounding that way. I’ll probably think of better wording as soon as I hit send
Sphinx?
Looks feline in origin.
Canât be a cat sith. White tiger is a maybe.
Probably has an obvious power putting it in the mythical category like the dragons.
I just imagined someone finding this comic for the first time and thinking Kayaâs eyes are always like that. It wouldnât last long but it would be hilarious in my opinion
LOL!Looking through comments, have to search up most of those mythical species:PI am a myhticalophobic myself,so it’s kinda emberrising to have to look up so many. Also,I think he is a lion-dog.But,his tail does not resemble the lion-dog’s tail.Their tails look like a lion’s.
I can just imagine next week’s comic already, lol.
Kaya pounces. “CUUUUUUUTIE!”
Kai: “Nooo!”
*Poof! A cloud of smoke suddenly appears!*
*Cloud of smoke dissipates.*
Kaya: “Huh?? Where’d he go?”
*There is now a small stone statue on the floor.*
_____________________________________________________________________________
On a separate note, I really like the use of size and perspective in this week’s comic! That’s sometimes difficult to get right, and you did a great job with it this week, Robin! I especially like the in-between panel, showing him halfway there. It really solidifies the perspective of distance across the room.
Hmmm.
Well, it could be a feline or canine hybrid with partial trait expression. I wonder what classifies him as mythical? There’s got to be something more to this kid.
Wait what is that image on Kaiâs shirt? It kinda looks like a mix of a T. rex and a dragon, but I have a small screen so it may just be that.
What species of dragon did you base Kai/Kaya off of? Also could you give me some world/character building tips?? I really need them.
Surely not a Jinn. All of the others, even the twins, have had physical explanations for their abilities.
Ya know what? Jin has Ash Ketchum’s cheek thingies. I think he’s a ninetails (or the animal ir was based on).
A Kyubi?
Hmm, will Kaya insist on babysitting this kid? He is just so cute!
Possibly a raiju? A few too few tails (supposed to be 6 usually) but if those swirls are supposed to be cloud shapes and jin has some super static issues (another use for the sandals? Keeping him from building a charge) they can be a weasel, wolf, or tiger, so species features check out.
Love the details!
He’s got the word for how lions roar on her shirt, and behind him is a temple (not a shrine, where kitsune are found) so I’m also casting my vote for the guardian lions (shisa).
Not a lion tail though.
RWS – Agreed, but if you look at normal shisa tails, you’ll see that none of them look like an actual lion tail. Much fluffier, and when drawn or sculpted they tend to be cloudy fluffy. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shisa (sorry, too lazy to take a picture of the ones in my living room)
Cute alert. We have a very cute one here. Love, Much love. Sending Love…Transaction Complete. Love has now been donated to Jin. I hope he enjoy’s his love.
His shirt says âroarâ! Cute!
Jin looks way friendlier than the Komainu statues đ Hope Kaya will not welcome him as she did with Benji XD
Only one word: CUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <3
Got to admit, Jin is cute as a button. đ And he’s going to have some really good friends there too.
No doubt due to my advanced age. life experiences and general cynicism, but when he said “Please be kind to me” every red flag and protective instinct I have kicked into high gear. Gonna keep an open mind until I know more, but…
On the other hand, with Kai and Kaya around, any possible bullies might just decide to back off. After all, it’s not much fun having people who can bench press large pieces of furniture and breath fire mad at you. Right?
And that’s not even counting Marco, the doctors and the general staff at the hospital.
Since Komainu are guardians, I suspect that he is not helpless at all.
Heyo Robin! Just thought I would say thank you,so VERY much, for giving me this idea.I love your comic, and I thought:Hey, why not make a comic too? So,I have used the mythical twins concept, and the 1 in every 1,000(though in this one its 1 in every 500).It is about two (unamed, right now) 14 year olds who are born mythical Taurians.A Taurian is essintialy a taur.https://en.wikifur.com/wiki/Taur One is a jackalope-taur(the boy)
and the other is a Chinese Dragon-taur.(girl).I have not started it yet,but I will very soon.
Okay… Can I just say this? Regardless what this ball of floof is, I wanna give pats.
Wherever he is, Benji gonna have a chill down his neck for he senses a new target for the kaya pounce
I’m thinking poor Benji is going to be of two minds about that. On the one hand he will get -pounced- less by Kaya, on the other hand he will get pounced less by -Kaya-! LOL
I like how you translated the japanese greetings, you made them sound more casual.
And Jin is a good choice for a name, as it is clearly male, which is not obvious among japanese names where many are genderless, like Akira or Hibiki.
I like Jin.
Someone needs to mention that in the first frame, Kaya is a bearded dragon.
Yeah, I thought Jin was a girl at first like everyone else. Also I notice that he only has the ears, tail, as well as hands and feet, I guess thatâs obviously supposed to go with Japanese pop culture.
Given that translations are provided (to readers) does that mean the twins understand all that was said?
Alternatively the twins are deliberately omitted in the panel in which he is speaking and no doubt he understands himself hence the translation.
jin when she meets someone- *Bows* “Hajimemashite!
kaya when she meets someone-ROAR *Pounce*
Me when i meet someone- …hi?
